Listening to Epicloud, with the audio commentary. So far it's awesome, as expected. But then again I think everything Devin does is awesome.

They still draw heavily from them.
Si Monumentum is 100% black metal, no prog, no death. It has the typical orthodox/religious sound like Funeral Mist, Glorior Belli, Ondskapt.. As for Fas, sure it's technical, but it's closer to a black metal take on free jazz than Dodecahedron, which is basically Cynic trying their hand at covering later Emperor. It's just a lot less riff salad-y, to me.

Well, regardless, we're just splitting hairs at this point.

Good lord. Dodecahedron draws from Deathspell. It's not even debatable, I bet the band members themselves would tell you that. When you listen to the Dodecahedron album you hear Deathspell, not Cynic or Emperor. The comparisons aren't in a vacuum... it hit me like a wall when I listened to it.

Relax man. I'm not denying there's some Deathspell influence, I just think its an overstated, lazy comparison that sells them short. The main guitarist, who wrote all of the music, is also in Exivious, who are basically a heaiver, instrumental Cynic. It's not that farfetched. Anyway, I already said agree to disagree.

And to keep from derailing this thread any further.. new Krallice and Gaza are both slightly flawed gems. The new Murder Construct I haven't listened to yet, but should be good. And the new Cryptopsy should be.. interesting. Anyone heard it yet?
