I've been enjoying the fuck out of that album as well, and it's not even kind of close to what I normally enjoy.

SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty Ones

Like a lot of the albums on this list, I didn't think this was anything special at first. But I've grown to absolutely adore it. This is crushingly heavy doom but hauntingly beautiful. The violins + female vocals give it such a surreal vibe. It's just... wow.

Although I love their accapela rendition of the traditional English folk song "House Carpenter" - I've listened to it SO many times - I still think it's too random. If they wanted to break up the monotony then they could've done with a short ambient instrumental or something. Gotta say that's my only problem with this incredible fucking album. The songs are easily distinguishable and the songwriting is quite stellar.

I think it's sooooo much more unique and effective than just another ambient instrumental. Somehow I don't think the album would've been complete without that track.

Yeah, I get that. But at the end of the day, I can't imagine the album without it. It would still be a masterpiece of an album, but it wouldn't be as "whole" as it is with it, and that's what tells me how necessary it was and what an important role it plays.

HOLY FUCKING FUCK. I don't listen to sludge/doom metal much, but this is by FAR the best album I've ever heard out of that genre. The songs are BRILLIANTLY crafted -- BRILLIANTLY -- and, well, they rule hard. The vocals are not traditional for this genre but they work so well. Frankly, I'm surprised hb420, our resident sludge/doom fan, hasn't rated this higher.

It Was Beautiful But Now It's Sour (listen to this blazed in the dark)
I agree with you on that. This is the album I loved most out of the sludge releases from this year. The songwriting is immense too while combining those heavy riffs with melodies.
