American Heritage - Sedentary

If you like Leviathian-era Mastodon, you should enjoy this. It's basically that but with more of a punk urgency and perhaps more stoner than sludge. Not very original, but at the same time, not that generic, either. They've got a cool sound of their own going on.

I discovered this at the beginning of the year, and while it used to be in my top ten, it certainly has lasting appeal. Killer songwriting.

Vektor - Outer Isolation

Black Future is my favorite album of all time. So I was definitely looking forward to this. Well... it's not as good. Standing alone? This album is fantastic. But it's impossible to listen to this while pretending that isn't the same band who put out the greatest thrash album of all time. I've warmed up to this after several listens, but it's still a disappointment. When the band announced that they were re-recording a a lot of stuff from their first demo for this album, my expectations significantly lowered, as I didn't that was really moving forward. But they were still high enough to leave me disappointed.

(And, frankly, I cannot understand how ANYONE thinks this album is better)

Let's talk about the album, though. It pretty much follows in the same direction as Black Future, just not as many memorable songs. There ARE some birlliant songs here, though. I don't think there's any one person here at this point who hasn't heard Vektor, but if there is, I'd describe Vektor as progressive/technical thrash, for fans of Voivod, Coroner, Destruction, and Atheist. Funny enough, I don't like any of those bands

Vektor recorded Reign in Blood?

I'd describe Vektor as Sadus if they stayed on their natural path... or ANY path for that matter.

While not as great as Black Future, Top 10 for sure. Just needs a few more spins I bet...

Rerecording stuff from the first album lowered your expectations?

So did you have lowered expectations for Black Future too?

I believe we already went through this. Re-recording songs from your previous album isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if many people hadn't even heard the originals (Vektor didn't get popular until well after the release of Black Future, and I hadn't even heard of them until then).

Re-recording songs from two albums ago is different, though.

jh, glad you're digging American Heritage

American Heritage was cool stuff. I know they did a split with Mastodon way back when, and I've been looking for the new album because Decibel gave it a 9, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Good stuff, for sure
