Kay, I'll be starting my Top 10 Live Performances. Once I get down to the top 5 I'll also begin counting down my bottom 5 performances (because of the 30 or so bands I've seen this year, only 5 were terrible. Also, I liked most bands I saw this year, but after the top 12, the quality diminishes a fair amount)

10.
Razormaze

headlining by themselves on August 26th

Razormaze is a great up-and-coming thrash band from Boston. They are quite popular in their scene actually, having just won the Boston Music Awards or something.

They played at a tiny pizzeria/bar in downtown Burlington and it was amazing! There was so much energy from the small crowd (bout 25 people?); some of the best moshing I've ever been a part of. Their Death Angel-esque material was even better live SOOOOO thrashtastic

Come In, Come out [live] it's a little loud so be sure to turn it down, but I feel this venue is similar to the one I saw them in

Razormaze is a band I really want to see live. I don't listen to them much because I can't get into the vocals, but I have the feeling that they would just destroy everything live. Also, they'd probably play with Lich King, who is also awesome

Every Time I Die

opening for GWAR at the Masquerade in Atlanta November 21

I don't think I've ever seen a band where more people are going crazy. There is sooo much movement in the front because everyone is trying to hump Keith Buckley (granted, he's a pretty sexy guy) and scream in his microphone. The energy from the crowd is just infectious, man. So much that it's actually kinda hard to hear the band themselves , which is they're only at #9.

underater bimbos from outer space [live] this was from this show

Definitely in my top 10 performances for this year. They were pretty damn flawless. And I got to see them all in speedoes!

Oh, and inb4 a certain band that I know will be your #1.

I saw ETID with Gwar. I absolutely hate the vocals. They have a lot of energy, but I don't care for the music at all.

In which case you're not unlike most metalheads Thanks for commenting anyway.

Obituary

headlining with Denial Fiend as support on November 21

I said in my review that I'm not a fan of Obituary on record (I think they're pretty boring, if not mediocre), but I decided to check them out anyway. I'm so glad I did. They are absolutely MONSTROUS live!!! They didn't have a lead guitarist so we didn't hear any solos from them, but to be honest I didn't even notice. They played in a small art gallery which I thought was cool. One of the most legendary death metal bands playing in a space that barely holds 150 people?! Awesome!!

live video from a small NYC venue on the same tour

Wolves in the Throne Room

headlining with Thou and Falls of Rauros as support, September 9

One of the coolest shows I've ever been to. They played on a farm outside Montpelier (Vermont's state capital). The atmosphere couldn't have been MORE fitting for this Cascadian atmospheric black metal band. I'm not a huge fan of them on record but they fucking killed live and the setting made it all the more enjoyable.

Ahrimanic Trance [live] this is in Brooklyn but it has a similar atmopshere

Absolutely agree. Collectively their studio output is pretty drab, but they are a forced to be reckoned with on stage
