Now now now, thinking "We R Who We R" tears shit up at a party is hardly the equivalent of loving Ke$ha.

4. Boris- Heavy Rocks

This may be a Metalsetlists first: two eligible albums from the same band in a top 10 list. While their other two (!) records this year leaned toward shoegaze and pop, this is more "classic" Boris. Wata (who, for my money, is one of the best guitarists around right now) lays down some insane riffs and solos, especially on "Galaxians" and "Window Shopping." There are some reworked versions of songs from New Album and Attention Please, such as "Jackson Head," "Tu La La," and a version of "Aileron" that's 10 minutes longer than the other version. Probably the centerpiece of this album is the lush, sprawling "Missing Pieces." Just when you think you have this record figured out, they close it with a one and a half minute, honest-to-god thrash metal song ("Czechoslovakia," a longer version of which you can find on the vinyl release).

Standout track: "Missing Pieces"

I don't get people who irrationally hate Adele.

What is there to hate? She can sing like a motherfucker.

Adele can sing very well, her songs are just really repeative. Definitely talented, just not really my thing.

I think a lot of it has to do with overexposure, which isn't a problem for me because I shelter myself from the radio and virtually all other forms of mainstream pop culture

Overexposure or not, though, "Rolling In the Deep" is EASILY one of the best pop songs in, like, a decade.

Fuck it, I'm just gonna blow through the rest of my list tonight. It's not like my #1 is some big secret, so there's no point in dragging this out.

3. Wolves In the Throne Room- Celestial Lineage

Black metal has always been the metal sub-genre that was hardest for me to crack. Too many of the classic bands had such bad production that it was all but unlistenable to me, and there are so many different styles that it was overwhelming. But when I started hearing that one of the most important new BM bands was made up of a couple of organic farmers in the Pacific Northwest, my curiosity was piqued. And that's how Wolves In the Throne room became my gateway drug to black metal. The one word you use to describe this band is "atmosphere." Their music really does sound like a cold, starry night in the woods. Jessika Kenney returns to lend her ethereal vocals as she did on Two Hunters, and once again she adds a welcome new dimension to the album. The opening track, "Thuja Magus Imperium" is probably my favorite, but there's not a dull moment to be found here. I wish I could say more, but I'm still finding it difficult to write about albums like this. Hopefully, though, this is just the beginning of a new love of black metal.

Standout track: "Thuja Magus Imperium"

2. Fucked Up- David Comes To Life

When you think of a band called "Fucked Up," you may picture a bunch of snotty suburban kids playing shitty hardcore to piss off their parents. Your last thought would probably be a smart, experimental punk rock band from Toronto who just released one of the most ambitious punk albums of all time. David Comes To Life is a massive 77-minute concept record/rock opera that tells the story of David and Veronica, two revolutionaries who fall in love until Veronica is tragically killed. The story gets very...interesting from there. How many concept albums do you know of where the main character gets in a fight with the narrator? This tale is just a backdrop to the fantastic music, though, which is based in punk but has the grandeur of classic rock like Queen at time. I'll get my one criticism out of the way now: it is VERY difficult to listen to the entirety of its epic running time in one sitting. That's because Damien Abraham, aka Pink Eye, has exactly one vocal style, and does not change it one iota at any point. If you can at least tolerate his throaty shouting, though, you'll be rewarded with the rare grandiose, career-defining opus that actually works.

Standout track- "Queen of Hearts"
