So your surprise at its position on the Quietus list wasn't disappointment, just surprise.

7. Altar of Plagues- Mammal

I'm a black metal n00b, and therefore have no idea how to write about it, so I'm just totally going to cheat and copy hb420's write-up on this.

Quote:
Irish Post-Black Metalers, Altar of Plagues have created the sub-genres first true masterpiece. Everything just feels huge-er and more lean than their debut. Getting the drummer from Abaddon Incarnate(one of the most awesome grind bands ever), Johnny King helped out tremendously as well. His drumming while his not being overly technical is fluid and dynamic. Adding to the more metallic punch the record has. The best song is easily the behemoth that's the opening track "Neptune Is Dead", with its hypnotic riffing and bouncing grove. It's a really long track that never looses your attention, even when it dips into dark and unsettling ambiance for periods of time.
That sums it up nicely. This is probably my biggest surprise of the year. I listened to it earlier in the year and didn't think much of it, but I recently revisited it and fell in love. "Neptune Is Dead" sets some really wonderful atmosphere, and "When the Sun Drowns In the Ocean" is equal parts beautiful and a little creepy.

Standout track: "Neptune Is Dead"

6. Landmine Marathon- Gallows

Jesus, talk about a record that just smashes your fucking skull in right from the get-go and never lets up. This Arizona death-grind group are slowly getting more notoriety, and rightfully so. Vocalist Grace Perry just keeps getting better and better; her voice is both sharp as a razor and vicious as a junkyard dog. This band really has a punk energy about them, which is what makes this album so relentless. I'm tempted to say it's a bit too short (8 songs, barely a half hour) but sometimes brevity can be a good thing. I expect big, big things from these guys in the future, and they have nowhere to go but up.

Standout track: "Three Snake Leaves"

We both get one "I don't need to explain myself to you" pick

I still don't get how you can give me shit about Adele when you're a Lady Gaga supporter.

Well, Born This Way isn't cracking my top 25, but that aside, they don't really sound alike. Both pop stars, very different approaches. I like Gaga's flashy garishness. Adele's just a little too weepy and self-serious for me. Her voice is fine, but I really don't care for the songs.

Fair enough, I suppose. That's the first time you've articulated it beyond "Adele? WTF"
