Mastodon -- Boston, MA -- November 21st, 2011
One of the best shows I've ever been to. This was my 5th time seeing Mastodon and they FINALLY completely have their shit together live. This blew the fucking doors off of everytime I saw them. I knew where a lot of people were coming from when they said Mastodon sucked live (the first two times I saw them they weren't particularally good. Brent was so fucked up the first time I saw them that he forgot a good number of the lyrics and missed almost every solo). Last night was absolute perfection. They lived up to their studio material. Their performance gave me fucking goosebumps. The set was very varied and covered a lot of their best material (I hope they never stop playing "Megalodon", "Iron Tusk" and "March Of The Fire Ants" because they are pretty much the heaviest fucking thing ever live). Even the worst song in their discography imo (Creature Lives) couldn't derail the perfection of the performance (maybe it was because Dillinger and Red Fang came out, it was pretty fucking cool and hilarious. The highlight of that was Jeff Tuttle eating a banana and offering it to Ben Weinman and a few of the dudes from Red Fang.) I am beyond happy that Mastodon finally completely blew away. A perfect set from my favorite band of all time.
Dillinger was their typical selves. It's honestly a complete fucking spectacle seeing them play live. Highlights included Greg throwing the mic to someone during the end of "Milk Lizard" and that person breaking the mic, Greg stage diving during "Sunshine The Werewolf" and not missing a beat, and best of all, Greg picking up the cymbal stand during "43% Burnt" and whipping it around like it was a towel. Their performances are so damn energetic and fun. A few of my friends that I went with had never listened to them before and left in complete fucking awe. Red Fang was a great opener for this tour. Their style fits with Mastodon perfectly. They put on a better show than when I saw them at Mayhem Fest earlier this year (although they still didn't get a great reception). Hell Red Fang even got me to mosh for the first time in a year and a half! I wish they played "Dirt Wizard" but aside from that, great show. A Mastodon thread with only 2 posts? What gives?
Anyway, I'm no fan of DEP but it sounds like a great show. Makes me anticipate Saturday night even more. |

I'm not sure. I haven't seen it on any recent setlists.

This might be the first time I see a band tour for a new album and they do every song I want to hear from that album.

It hasn't been on one of their setlists in a long time. They normally only play one slow song each headlining set and Unretrofied has been replaced by either Widower or Black Bubblegum most of the time.

Also went to this show, and mastodon421 is spot on. The show was awesome, all three bands were amazing. Only thing I'd add was that my friends and I ran into Greg from Dillinger and was talking about how much he loves between the buried and me, and animals as leaders, after he saw my friends BTBAM shirt.
