Fu Manchu -- West Chester, PA -- November 16th, 2011

Awesome show tonight by both Fu Manchu and Honky. Fu Manchu is currently touring for the 15th anniversary of their landmark record "In Search Of..." and on this tour they are playing the record in it's entirety. I couldn't miss this opportunity since this record is a) the first record I ever heard by them and b) my favorite record of theirs.

I arrived at The Note just as Honky were taking the stage. Great band! I've seen them live a few times and they are always a blast. If you don't know, Honky features Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfers on bass and lead vocals. They are kinda southern/stoner/boogie hard rock. They played for about 45 minutes. I don't have their complete set list since I am not too familiar with a lot of their stuff. I do know they played:

"Gittin' It"
"Love To Smoke Your Weed"
"Lung Punch"
"Snortin' Whiskey, Drinkin' Cocaine"
"Smokin' Weed With Helios Creed"

Next up was Fu Manchu!! They took the stage about 10:45 and proceeded to kick ass for 75 minutes straight! No nonsense, no bullshit, just kick ass rock n roll! The opened with 4 upbeat numbers that, surprising to me, got a pit going. I have seen Fu Manchu live around 10 times and I have never seen a mosh pit for them. I guess cuz the crowd was younger and more energetic but the old folks like me were a bit annoyed. How can you enjoy a show when some drunken idiot keeps ramming into you? I'm 41 years old goddamnit, watch my hip! Just stand there, headbang, pump your fist and have a good time. No need for all that running around nonsense.

Anyway, rant over. After the first 4 opening tunes, it was time for "In Search Of..." from start to finish. And just like it did in 1996, the record kicked all kinds of ass. To me, all of Fu Manchu's best tunes are on this record and they sounded as crunchy and fuzzy as ever. And it was awesome to hear the entire thing in order. After "In Search Of..." the crowd begged for more and the band obliged with an awesome version of "Laserbl'ast!" off of "The Action Is Go." And then it was over. The band left the stage, the house music came up, the lights came on and the crowd still chanted for more! But the band didn't return. So I split. Great show by both bands. Here is Fu Manchu's complete set list:

1. Hell On Wheels
2. Evil Eye
3. Boogie Van
4. King Of The Road
(In Search Of...)
5. Regal Begal
6. Missing Link

11. Strato-Streak
12. Solid Hex
13. The Falcon Has Landed

17. Laserbl'ast!
