Top 15 Live Performances

So not only did this year produce some pretty amazing recorded material, I also went to more shows than ever before. Most impressively for me is that of the six major Norwegian Second Wave black metal bands, I saw all three that one can actually see with Emperor broken up and Burzum and Darkthrone being projects of the nature that they are: Enslaved, Mayhem and Immortal. Best concert year for me ever, as the wide variety of cities and venues and genres below can attest.

15. Alexander Tucker
The Macbeth, London, May 19
Highlight: Didn't play proper songs from his releases, so, uh, the whole set

14. Enslaved
Bottom Lounge, Chicago, Oct. 2
Highlight: "Ethica Odini"

13. Symphony X
Peabody's, Cleveland, April 29
Highlight: "The Odyssey"

12. Liturgy
Russian Recording, Bloomington, July 8
Highlight: "Sun of Light"

11. Titus Andronicus
Le Poisson Rouge, New York, Nov. 14
Highlight: "A More Perfect Union"

10. Coffinworm
The Bishop, Bloomington, April 16
Highlight: "The Sadistic Rites of Count Tabernacula"

9. Immortal
Bottom Lounge, Chicago, Feb. 22
Highlight: "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)"

8. Mayhem
Phoenix Hill Tavern, Louisville, Dec. 9
Highlight: "Freezing Moon"

7. Wolves in the Throne Room
The Rudyard Kipling, Louisville, Sep. 2
Highlight: "I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots"

6. Fucked Up
Village Underground, London, May 20
Highlight: "The Other Shoe"

5. Judas Priest
US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Nov. 8
Highlight: "Beyond the Realms of Death"

4. Arcade Fire
UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Apr. 24
Highlight: "My Body Is a Cage"

3. Katatonia
Peabody's, Cleveland, Sep. 25
Highlight: "Clean Today"

2. My Dying Bride
O2 Academy Islington, London, May 18
Highlight: "The Dreadful Hours"

1. Fucked Up
Le Poisson Rouge, New York, Nov. 14
Highlight: Honestly can't choose one, please don't make me

Melt-Banana and Anaal Nathrakh are 16 and 17.

Melt-Banana were legitimately my 15 until I dumped them for Tucker, but dude, Nathrakh were off, Dave was super sick and sound was bad. I had a lot of fun and I never stopped moving, but objectively they didn't stand a chance.

Didn't you say at the time that they were amazing?

Looking back at my thread, I said I had a great time but was largely nonspecific. Post-show euphoria was obviously still set in, but if you look at it from the fact that Dave was sick and his vocals were off and the sound wasn't great, yeah, I can definitely pick 15 better sets.

It was a ton of fun and I in no way regret going, but come on, not every set is perfect, and the 15 listed here basically were. I saw close to 100 bands play live this year.
