Shut up. You're doing better than the people that listen to Cradle of Filth and think THAT's black metal.
Yeah, like I said, I try hard. I guess I really, really like black metal that almost isn't black metal, you know? Alcest is shoegaze for all intensive purposes, Agalloch is folk metal, and the modern Enslaved that I adore is one of the proggiest bands out there. Vertebrae Enslaved is completely different than Frost Enslaved.

The big exception would be Emperor I guess, but even then, they use symphonic elements to the extreme. I've never really been a Burzum or Mayhem fan, and the Darkthrone I like is when they went crust-punk.

Already a Venom fan, but I'll be interested in checking some of the other stuff.

Darkthrone's punk/current form is fucking amazing
"Circle The Wagons" was an album I didn't expect to like, but its one of my favorite recent DT albums.

In regards to the song, Black Metal, go and listen to Possessed's song "Death Metal", they rip off a part of it in the second chorus or verse or something. Been a while since I've listened to both.

I'm not a huge Venom fan, but the song has one of the best metal riffs ever!

Doing this one a little early because I'll be at the Chiefs game all day tomorrow!

October 2nd

Bathory - Call From The Grave

Bathory (SWE)
"Call From The Grave"
Under The Sign Of The Black Mark (1987)

Of all the bands I'd consider part of the first wave of black metal, I'd say Bathory is the most "black metal" whereas the other bands helped influence black metal with more their lyrics and imagery. Quorthon was through and through black metal. His first four albums (including his foray into Viking Metal WHICH HE CREATED) are really amazing. Under The Sign of the Black Mark is my favorite of his black metal releases. RIP Quorthon.
