R.E.M Break Up

From Consequence of Sound:

Quote:
“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

Great band!
I can't say I have been in touch with their output since the mid 90s.
Their early material is simply classic.

I always thought they were an extremely genuine, non-pretentious, alt/college/whatevergenreyouwant band, unlike many of their peers from that era.....

This is sad news, no matter how long they've been around. This band truly laid the groundwork to Grunge and what we call Alternative Rock today. But, I wish they would have at least toured their new album Collapse Into Now before calling it quits.
