I've always wanted to pop those boils around that eye on the cover.

This is as heavy as death metal gets without blastbeats. I don't really have a whole lot to say about this one to be honest. It's great death metal from a time when it was new and innovative. John Tardy is of course amazing, and while I don't much care for covers, his cadences on Circle of the Tyrants give it a nice flavor. James Murphy's leads also add nice dressing to the body of the songs (the one at the beginning of the title track is particularly tasty). I guess the reason why it didn't make the list is because the sections can drag at times.

HM10. Ozzy Osbourne: No Rest For The Wicked

I felt I should give an honorary mention to at least one other Ozzy album. It was his heaviest since Blizzard and features the debut of one Zakk Wylde. You wonít hear the abuse of pinch harmonics and pentatonic scales here. Just a guy coming up with the best riffs and solos he can muster. Iíve also had a lot of love for drummer Randy Castillo. The touring lineup of Zakk, Randy and Geezer Butler would be one of the best lineups Ozzy ever had! Ozzy sounds like, well Ozzy. Youíve made up your mind about him whether you like this album or not. But for what itís worth, he sounds the most menacing on this album.

I think he has some impressive vocal melodies on Demon Alcohol.

HM11. Sleep: Holy Mountain

Stoner caravan from deep space arrives indeed. This album takes you on a journey regardless of youíre high or not, and its not even a concept album. Matt Pikeís doom riffs will make you do multiple takes as to whether or not your hearing Tony Iommi, and the sudden speed shifts makes you wonder whether or not you actually listening to vintage Black Sabbath (since you know, they did that a lot). Donít be intimidated by the fact that some of these songs are over 8 minutes. They are so entrancing you wonít even realize that such a long period of time has passed. Sleep are actually kind of like Burzum in that they pick the perfect riffs that you donít mind hearing for over 32 bars. If you consider yourself any type of fan of doom/stoner/sludge metal, this is essential!

HM12. Vio-lence: Eternal Nightmare

When I first conceived my list, this album was originally on it. But as my musical collections grew, and my purist thrasher pretensions began to slightly decrease, I realized I had to make a concession. I did genuinely believe Bonded By Blood and Darkness Descends unquestionably had an impact on the greater good of metal, whereas this was an above average thrash album that was fun to taunt Machine Head fans with. Sean Killian gets a lot of crap on this album, but I prefer his vocals over a couple of people in top tier bands (David Wayne, 1986 Kai Hansen, Blitz in the late 90ís). Most of the songs here have great personalities, but Bodies on Bodies gets the nod for having not one, but two brilliant mosh thrash breaks!

At least the album makes the runner-up list. It would probably be hovering at 3 or 4 on my list :P

Even in the last year or so as I've branched off from thrash into death (and a bit of black metal), that album still remains one of the greatest ever. I just can't get over how great it is and I think Sean Killian makes that album. Don't get me wrong, there are hundreds upon hundreds of great riffs in it, but his vocal performance is absolutely mind-blowing. I think every track has been my favourite at one point or another.

Conclusion:

Well that was a fun ride wasn’t it kids? This unordered alphabetical list was just sitting in my computer just waiting to be revealed at the right time to the world. Perhaps I should have done it after Powermaiden’s and before Maiden33’s as my list seems to have opened to flood gates for everybody, and the idea is just really watered down now.

Would I change it if I was gonna do it again? Probably. Especially since I’ll probably have obtained more albums worthy of the top 100. I also would have just made the whole thing alphabetically ordered. Aside from the top 30, I really have no idea whether or not album 42 is really better than 69!

Well I hope this was as entertaining to you guys reading it as it was to me writing it. And hey if nothing else, I turned PowerMaiden into a Death fan!
