Great list JRA. I think represents almost like a list of must-have albums for any metalhead.

Presenting...

THE TOP 12 ALBUMS I REALLY WISH MADE THE LIST

So a bunch of you are probably wondering “Why the fuck didn’t I see album X on this list?” To be honest, I’m kinda protesting right with you.

In hindsight maybe it was a bad idea to have Master of Puppets on the list at all at #100 as a courtesy praise, when I could have had any one of the following in that spot. It certainly would have save me some immediate grief. Rather people would have had to think about it before realizing the 1986 piece of metal history was nowhere to be seen.

So why 12? 10 is too cliché, 9 isn’t trying hard enough, 5 is too psychologically satisfying, 11 has been beaten to death by third rate Spinal Tap jokes. So 12 will be the magic number. Since this is a post-list list, these will be ordered alphabetically by band (truth be told, I kinda wish I did that with this list in the first place).

HM1. Anthrax: Among The Living

Well I suppose it’s obvious where I stand on the metal litmus test I mentioned during the Persistence of Time entry. One thing that this album has in its favor in that’s its structured like a pop album, where all the strong songs are clumped at the beginning, although that does mean it burns out at the end, whereas Spreading the Disease ends with the triumphant Gung-Go. Then again Spreading had the abortion known as “The Enemy” which is the most offensive Holocaust song ever by virtue of the fact that it sucks so much ass with a boring ass cheesy chorus. The songs here are considerably more violent than the songs from it’s predecessor, which is why I think it’s more beloved by metal fans. All that energy puts over all members of the band including Joey, who gains a considerable edge from this album that he would never let go.

Among the Living is great but I've never thought it was as good as MoP, RiP, or RiB either.

Thank you again good sir.

HM2. Autopsy- Mental Funeral

If I could go back and redo the list, the only thing I’d probably change is I’d substitute Suffocation’s Pierced From Within for this. I actually had this album as I was first writing the list, but it was too soon. This album has slightly more character than Pierced in that with this album, there is 100% the atmosphere of death and rotting flesh. Autopsy are kind of unsung geniuses in while all their peers were trying to be as fast and brutal as possible, Chris Reifert asks, “Um, yea...isn’t this sub-genre supposed to be scary?” There needs to be a setup of tension before the shock in classic horror, and to utilize that, these guys incorporate elements of doom, making their songs not only extremely creepy, but memorable as well. This is grade Z-schlock, and I mean that in the best possible way.
