blink-182 -- Bonner Springs, KS -- September 9th, 2011

Tonight was special.

On July 13th, 2001, I saw my very first concert. It was blink-182. I had been jamming their newest CD at the time (Take Off Your Pants And Jacket) and I was obsessed with it. My sister and her friend took me; they weren't too interested in the band, but I went nuts for them. Or, as nuts as a 13 year old could go. The band was crude, loud, funny, and exhilarating to watch. It was the first time I had those butterflies in my stomach (girls were still icky) and the bass drum shook every single one of my bones each time it was played. It was an experience I'll never forget, and it really solidified concerts as being my life's passion, not just a temporary distraction from life.

I decided to go the the exact spot in the lawn I was at in 2001 to see blink from, and I'm really glad I made that decision. While their past tours have sometimes been pretty over the top with stage props and stuff, this tour was a bit held back. Just some monitors behind them (which sometimes showed the band themselves as they played), but they also had one of the best laser/light shows I'd ever seen! Someone at the sound tent was also using a smoke machine to help the lasers out all across the audience. It was definitely cool.

The one thing I was really scared about when I saw blink-182 after they put out their last, self-titled album (and also when I saw them after they reunited) is that they'd lose their sense of juvenile humor. But all these years later, it's still intact. Tons of penis, masturbation, incest jokes thrown in even in the middle of songs. The way they interacted with the crowd was just hilarious and they have incredible chemistry on-stage. It's incredibly juvenile humor, don't get me wrong, but it's just refreshing.

The set was great. All their big hits, some lesser known stuff, and four new songs. The new songs got me really excited for the new album. "Up All Night" has really grown on me and sounds awesome live. "Heart's All Gone" just might be the punkest song blink has ever written. When "The Rock Show" started, I got really nostalgic. It was the song they opened with in 2001. It really hit me at how cool it was to be in the same place seeing the same band ten years later! Other highlights were "Always", "Josie", and "The Party Song" which apparently was the first time EVER it had been performed live in full!

Honestly, it was probably the best I've seen blink-182, for much more than just how good they were that night, musically. They'll always be one of my favorite bands, and I'll never be ashamed to say it.

1. Feeling This
2. Up All Night
3. The Rock Show
4. What's My Age Again?
5. Down
6. I Miss You
7. Stay Together For The Kids
8. Dumpweed
9. Always
10. Violence
11. After Midnight
12. First Date
13. Fuck A Dog
14. Heart's All Gone
15. The Party Song (first time ever live and complete)
16. Man Overboard
17. Ghost On The Dancefloor
18. Happy Holidays, You Bastard (in the dark)
19. All The Small Things
20. Josie
----
21. When You Fucked Grandpa
22. Carousel
23. Dammit
24. Family Reunion

Support blink was My Chemical Romance. I guess out of the unholy trifecta that is MCR/Fall Out Boy/ Panic! At The Disco, MCR is the least worst of them all. Their old stuff is pretty much fun pop/punk but their newer stuff and deeper cuts are just kinda boring alt.rock, and their newer stuff especially is much more electronic. People were going crazy for them, but overall I wouldn't really want to see them again.

1. Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)
2. I'm Not Okay (I Promise)
3. Planetary (GO!)
4. The Only Hope For Me Is You
5. Helena
6. The Kids From Yesterday
7. Give 'Em Hell, Kid
8. Teenagers
9. S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W/
10. Welcome To The Black Parade
11. Cancer

Opening the show was Matt and Kim. Normally that would be insane, but the crowd didn't seem too interested unless they were doing one of their silly covers or throwing balloons into the crowd. Also the sound for Matt wasn't really that great. Still fun, just don't want to see them open a huge show.

Set included:

Yea Yeah
Daylight
Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare

blink-182: 9/10
My Chemical Romance: 7.5/10
Matt and Kim: 7.5/10

That's awesome they played the Party Song. They attempted it when I saw them last year but only played the beginning. Nice long set too.

When I saw them in 2001, they came out on stage with the curtains up and the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey playing. When it reached its crescendo, they dropped the curtain and "FUCK" was written in flames behind them. They then kicked right into The Rock Show.

Best first concert ever.

you can kinda see it here

Perfect first concert, man! I saw Red Hot Chili Peppers on Halloween for my first. Pretty life changing.

Good review, glad to hear Blink played better than when I saw them last month. Also really cool you got to see The Party Song in full, that's fucking awesome! Cancer is an awful closer for MCR, such a downer of a song.

I just don't get all the love for Blink. I guess it's because I was never into them when I was 12...

I saw Blink-182 opening for Primus in 1998. I don't really remember too much of the show at all, I just wanted to mention it and list off Blink-182 as another band who I saw open for Primus only to end up getting way bigger than them in the years after.
