The Best DOOM Albums of 2011

Separate from my other thread, and because this is easily my top metal sub-genre, this is a list of the best proper doom metal (i.e. not death/doom) releases of 2011.

I'm not going to bother putting it in order, because frankly Pentagram would come top, and that's not worth waiting for to reveal. Plus, for any fan of doom metal they're all more than worth the investigation time.

So, getting this one out of the way first, because it's the most obvious of the year but is SO good:

Pentagram
Last Rites
Metal Blade

Next, one which might not be news to one or two of the more clued-in doom fans here that I've noticed discovering this one more recently, but released back in February was:

Orchid
Capricorn
The Church Within Records

I like this Orchid better

This one's not bad, though.

One for fans of the female-fronted doom rock thing which is becoming pretty prevalent at the moment. For people who dig The Devil's Blood and Blood Ceremony, this female-fronted version of Pentagram slipped out mostly unnoticed in May:

Out-and-out traditional doom that is perhaps trying to be a little too clever with a concept that doesn't quite work, and gets disrupted with a cover song in the middle, but otherwise first class doom:

Surtr
World of Doom
Altsphere Productions

Great list so far, haven't heard of Castle. Orchid and Pentagram are both great, Orchid ranked really high on my list.

Haven't listened to a lot of Doom this year. Gonna check out these albums as soon as I get the chance (which should be starting in roughly 13 hours when I get home).

Right, time for another one.

This was a bit of a surprise to begin with. Their debut was classic traditional doom, and was damn good too. This time, although there are still plenty of doom elements, they've started doing something different. Think AIC-does-doom-and-post-metal-with-Paradise-Lost. Horrific on paper, excellent and incredibly interesting in reality...
