Symphony X - Iconoclast (2011)

Ended up being pretty underwhelmed by this. Definitely doesn't need to be 90 minutes or whatever it is. A few huge highlights though (End of Innocence, When All Is Lost, Prometheus). Not sure there's a lot of "oh, I didn't catch that!" depth to it that would make it better on future listens, but I'll force myself through a few more. I'm pretty sure most of this stuff would be good live, but I just didn't really enjoy sitting down and listening to the album that much.


EDIT: Russell, however, is perfect, as usual.

EDIT 2: They're kind of becoming Dream Theater in the sense that every song has ideas I love and very few songs do I love straight through.

Brad, you're crazy. How is Prometheus a highlight but the title track, Children of a Faceless God, Electric Messiah, and Reign in Madness don't even get nods?

Title track and Electric Messiah definitely didn't do it for me, but the other two you mention are above average.

This just deeply saddens me. Symphony X have always been a band you and I have basically 100% agreed upon, even down to most specifics. Why must you now do this?

Yeah, it's kind of weird. Maybe Listen #2 will reveal greatness I didn't catch the first go around.

I do think it's a bit overlong but I still like it very much. I'm just not able to say it's perfect or anything.
