My Dying Bride -- London, England -- May 18th, 2011

20th Anniversary tour, first date, set of the year for me without a doubt. This is all the songs, but the order might be a bit fuzzy in the middle, if anyone was there and can confirm that I'd appreciate it. I didn't get Your Shameful Heaven, my favorite song of theirs, but otherwise, wow, talk about a band knowing what their setlist should be. Not that there's much bad MDB material, but this was a nonstop amazing two hours-ish of music.

Sear Me
Bring Me Victory
The Whore, the Cook, and the Mother
Like Gods of the Sun
Catherine Blake
The Crown of Sympathy (first time played live in 10 years)
For You
The Cry of Mankind
The Sexuality of Bereavement (first time ever played live)
She Is the Dark
Your River
My Body, A Funeral
The Dreadful Hours

Aaron is one of the coolest frontmen ever. He paints/tattoos his fingers and fingernails red so it literally looks like he's just clawed his way out of a grave. During songs, he's breaking down and crying and dry heaving all over the stage, and he recovers between them and drops hilariously wry quotes ("I know it's surprising since we're in our sixties, but this is the longest set we've ever done," "Last time we played here was with Paradise Lost and Anathema. Quite a fun party after, actually," "Who else would open with a 9-minute doom epic sung in Latin?") on everyone. Musically the band is one of the tightest I've ever seen as well. I can still barely put sentences together because I loved it so much. Turning point for me as a consumer of live music. Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

Oh, and Ava Inferi is terrible unless you like Nightwish but wish they played funeral doom.

So did you eventually get a setlist off stage?

Nah, we ended up leaving about five seconds after you did to get merch. If I got a setlist, I wouldn't doubt the order.

Well, you're looking for something which fits the following outline:

??
Bring Me Victory
The Whore, the Cook, and the Mother
Catherine Blake
??
For You
??
The Sexuality of Bereavement
??
Your River
My Body, A Funeral
The Dreadful Hours

I didn't have anything between 'The Whore...' and 'Catherine Blake'... but could have just missed a segue!

Yep, they went straight into Like Gods of the Sun, so I guess I nailed it from memory. Awesome.

Ava Inferi set, more or less:

Onyx
By Candlelight & Mirrors
Danca Da Ondas
Last Sign of Summer
Winter Queen
Tempestade/Blood of Bacchus
A Portal
The Living End
Majesty

The first five are definitely right, the last one is definitely right, but they may have only done two of the three in between.

So yeah, seriously outstanding gig. I musically really enjoyed Ava Inferi, and have nothing against female vocals with doom music, but she has precisely one tone. After two songs it's boring, even if the band are pulling out some killer riffs. And I can't stand all that hand-waiving, fake emotion bullshit.

MDB were just fantastic start to finish, and that closer of 'The Dreadful Hours' just left the whole audience stunned.
