THERION to release adventure board game



011 is an adventure game set in a steampunk version of our world.
Events take place in Turin, the "magical" city per excellence, in an uchronic 1811, in a strange past where a marvelous technology is moved by steam, as in Jules Verne's novels.

The steam engines, that huge security systems keep always on, grant the survival of citizens, as the city is trapped into the cold grip of a winter that started three years ago. It's the end of Fimbulvetr, the great winter that, in Norse mythology, comes before the Ragnarök. When Fenrir, the Wolf, will awake from his slumber, the Ragnarök will start, and the world as we know it will cease to exist. A new beginning, or the end for us all?

Eight mysterious characters come from the North to stop the awakening of the Wolf God, but only one of them, the Chosen One, has the power to do it for real.

Playing alternatively the eight characters, the players must find who is the Chosen One, compose the mystical song which can put back to sleep the mighty Fenrir, and find where is located the magical Organ of Snorri, a unique instrument able to endure the magnificence of the enchanted melody.

The game uses a new, "mechanical" action selection system, and intrigues player with a paradox: characters are all working to stop the Ragnarök, but only one player can achieve victory! To make things even more hard, in the middle of the game one of the players will become the incarnation of Fenrir, and will play to let the Ragnarök begins.

The eight characters have the aspect of the members of the Symphonic Metal band Therion. The game is officially supported by the band, and both the leader of the ensemble, Christofer Johnsson, and many members of the band followed the design and the development of the game.

It will be awesome if the figurines or whatever you want to call them representing the characters are detailed and accurate... particular for Katarina Lilja...

Hi all, I'm Marco Valtriani, the designer of "011" (and a great metal fan, my favourite bands are Fear Factory, Moonspell, and obviously Therion).
Well, in the game the characters are represented by plastic miniatures!
Now I just saw the 3D rendering of the models, and they're great, the publisher is doing a really accurate job.
I hope I will be able to post some preview pictures of them in the next months.

If you have any question, feel free to ask here or post something on the Facebook Page of 011.
In the next days, on www.boardgamegeek.com, will be released an article about my "designer's diaries", telling some spoilers about how the game works, how Therion were involved, and so on.

I hope you liked this "intrusion"

Damn, this makes me wish i had more irl friends who are into that stuff , id love to play this when it comes out

The game is designed to be played also by "non-gamers" (I hope you understand what I mean). Rules are deep, but the game focus more on tactics than on strategy, and once you understood the general rules the gameplay is really fast.
I'm really proud of the mechanics of 011. Is something yet unseen, but also not so hard to master for a boardgames newcomer.

And, hell, there are 8 miniatures of Therion, ranging from Christofer Johnsson to Lori Lewis!
It's the dream of every metalhead game designer!

Ouch. Not easy at all

Surely, the game is not similar to classic games (Monopoly, Risk, Clue, Trivial Pursuit, and so on).

It is an hybrid between american games and eurogames: it has a strong theme but also "easy" mechanics, with a gameplay focusing more on player's choices than on luck.
Because of its hybrid nature, it's really hard to find something similar.
It may be remotely related to Bruno Faidutti's Red November (because it's a time run: time is running away and you have to complete the quest before Ragnarok begins!), but the setting and the core rules are completely different.

As you may have read, players move 8 characters on the board, gathering clues to stop the ragnarok. In order to do that, players must also investigate about many things: they must compose a magic song, find a specific instrument to play it, and find who is the Chosen One, the only one able to play the song and put Fenrir back to sleep.

I'm almost sure that the main mechanic, the one that allows players to choose their actions, is something completely new.
To move characters around the map and collect clues players move a "physical" mechanism made by three gears: each gear indicates something different (what kind of machine may be used during the turn, what investigation action you may take, and so on), and obviously they move together, so you have to plan how to move them to do the best for your character.

I'm sorry but I can say too much more, I released an interview about mechanics and I must stay quiet about the details until it's online
I will post here a link ASAP, so you can read a bit more about the game and I can speak a lot more about rules (anyway, they will be avaiable online some days before Essen 2011).

Maybe the best thing I can say is that, apart from the rules, all is made to let the story "live", focusing on the concepts of "investigation", "time run" and "secret identities"...

any idea when it will be released? also, would i be able to pick it up in a local store (like barnes & noble) or have to order exclusively online?
