Vacation to Norway

For Thanksgiving week my family and I traveled to Norway for a short vacation; although it was only a week, it felt like a long time to me, because previously the longest vacation I had taken was three days. Over the course of the week I took plenty of photos, and I thought that you guys might be interested in seeing some of them. I may not have been able to capture every image I wanted (due to uncooperative weather and time constraints), but overall I am pleased with what I came back with. I will try to explain a little bit about each photo instead of just putting a short caption.

Day one was spent in Notodden, a good sized town a bit outside of Oslo, the capital. We did not have the time to drive around a leisurely pace since the daylight hours are about 9:30 am -3:00 pm, so we rented a taxi for a few hours. The taxi company in Notodden had never done this before but were happy to accommodate us. Our driver, or tour guide as we called him, was very friendly and new the roads like the back of his hand. He took us to many beautiful locations while giving us interesting history lessons on the way. This photo was taken off the side of the road overlooking the industrial part of the town.

After exploring Notodden and the surrounding areas we were dropped off at the Heddal stave church for a personal tour. The tours are only offered from May to September since the church is closed the rest of the year, but they were nice enough to let us in anyway. The church is still used for Sunday services as well as weddings, but to preserve the paintings on the walls inside (circa 1600) it is locked up during the cold seasons.

The church was constructed in the early 1200s and most of it remains original, with the restorations done in both the 1850s and 1950s. It is one of twenty-eight remaining stave churches in Norway and is the only one with three towers.

The second day was spent traveling from Oslo to Bergen via train. Unfortunately, my camera is not the greatest in the world, so the photos taken from inside the train aren't as spectacular as they could have been. I had to shoot at ISO 1600 to get a non-blurry image, but that makes it very grainy. After removing the reflections of the windows in Photoshop I came out with a few alright shots.

On the third day we spent our time walking around Bergen on our own. There are tons of historic buildings in the city, so the daylight hours were dedicated to photography. At sunrise we headed up to Mt. Fløyen to see the view of the city. The lighting from the lookout is not ideal during that time of year, so we planned on returning after sunset for some better photos. Before we headed back down we walked around the trails a little bit.

Here is a street back in the city. I would like to add that a few blocks from this location I found a building with a Satyricon logo spray painted on the side of it. Picture here.

Due to fires throughout the centuries many of the older buildings burned down, but in Bryggen (the wharf) there is a string of buildings from the 1700s. Most of them are now shops, and one is a restaurant. I can only imagine how many tourists flock to this area in the summer.

Back at Mt. Fløyen later I captured the photo I wanted of the town.

And I took one more photo before dropping off my camera gear at the hotel.

The third day we took a ferry to a small village named Rosendal, where we walked around for a few hours before heading back to Bergen to catch a flight to Ålesund. Rosendal is surrounded by large mountains, causing about an hour less of daylight, so I didn't have very much time to take photos. I only took one photo that I was really pleased with.

The next morning a taxi picked us up at our hotel on an island near Ålesund. Like in Notodden, we rented the taxi for some hours, although the taxi company in Ålesund actually offered this service. The manager of the company went out of her way and set up an itinerary for us and assigned us a driver who had lived in California for nine years. And the taxi driver called a friend to open the church on one of the islands and give us a tour of it. After telling us a bit about the church and taking us up to the bell tower he invited us back to his house for coffee. I was surprised at how incredibly hospitable the people had been to us! Afterward we headed over to the Alnes lighthouse, where we were given a tour. The guy who gave us the tour had already prepared snacks and tea for us before we arrived. Once again, I couldn't believe how friendly everybody was. Here is a photo I took on the way over to Alnes and a couple from the lighthouse.

Before it got too dark we headed into Ålesund for a couple photos. The first one I ended up having to crop and Photoshop a ton to fix my mistakes in composing it, but I salvaged it enough to be half satisfied with it. The second is overlooking the city from Aksla.

That night we flew back to Oslo for our last day. That day was mainly filled with tourist type things (shopping and visiting museums). I have to say that the trip was the best experience of my life and I can't wait to go back one day and explore more of the country, because I only got a small taste of it. I hope you enjoyed my photos and if you want me to elaborate on anything, let me know!

All looks far more worthwhile than Oslo itself, which is a dump.

Hey man, glad to see you finally got to go to Norway! I want to go there really badly; my family and I have talked about it a bunch. My mom's grandparents are actually from Sweden, so that's awesome. Maybe we could see both countries and make it a two-week trip or something.

Those are pretty some awesome photos, too Too bad you didn't see the fjords, though...

Sorry if this has been answered, but I know about the Hardangervitta (SP?) mountains from Ildjarn. Did you see those?

Sweden is the better country, I must say.

But you could totally pull that off. There's even an easy train journey between Gothenburg and Oslo. You could also hit Denmark as there's a train between Malmo and Copenhagen. I use it every year.
