Stone Temple Pilots -- Uncasville, CT -- August 31st, 2010
Setlist:
Crackerman Wicked Garden Vasoline Heaven and Hot Rods Between the Lines Hickory Dichotomy Still Remains Cinnamon Big Empty Dancing Days (Zeppelin) Pretty Penny Silvergun Superman Plush Interstate Love Song Huckleberry Crumble Down Sex Type Thing E: Dead and Bloated Trippin on a Hole So, it's Tuesday and STP is coming to Mohegan Sun Casino. They have played here twice in recent years, I was at the first one when they first got back together and it kicked ass. Shows at Mohegan are hit or miss. The security is tight, and crowds usually suck because it's the casino so there are a lot of people there who got comp'd tickets and are just there to be there. This usually equates to a LOT of fucking sitting. I have gotten into fist fights over this. I actually had a guy spit on me one time because I was standing during Alice in Chains. This lead to a very violent altercation, his removal, and an upgrade of my seats. So, anyway, I didn't have tickets for this show. At around 5pm I'm on facebook and this girl who I haven't spoken to in years posts "two tickets to STP, $40 for the pair." I call her and she puts her husband on the phone. He tells me he is part of the tribe and can get tickets (free of course). I get two tickets for $30 after heckling. Me and my girl arrive at the Sun and meet a bunch of our friends who are goin to the show as well. We walk around and gamble/drink a little bit. With everybody in high spirits, we enter the arena and part ways. We get to our seats and they're elevated but decent. There really isn't a bad seat in the arena. It holds 8K people for concerts and it's well designed so you really can't go wrong. They open with Crackerman which surprised me and everything sounds great. After Wicked Garden, I suggest to the girl that we go on the floor. This requires goin through three levels of security, and then finding a vacant seat without looking as though you're looking for one. It can be tough. Long story short, we breeze through all three security guards with some swift talking and get lucky on finding an empty seat that nobody ever came back to. Now we're fuckin with a full stiffy: much louder, better view, and, well, we're on the floor. Sweet. The band sounded great. They had a couple of fuck ups/haggard endings but it actually added character to the show because they rebounded well. There was a lot of improv/short jam parts that kicked major fucking ass. They were doing things in between songs that gave the feel of a small club show. As usual, Scott would speak to the crowd and after 3 words whatever he said was totally inaudible. The best 1-2 combo of the night was Dancing Days > Pretty Penny. I don't really listen to Pretty Penny but the way they did it the other night was fucking sick and it fit perfectly after the LZ cover. The Zep cover was fucking SICK. In certain parts, like the "Will you follow me down" portion of Down, Scott shows his age. While he hits the note, he isn't belting it out like he used to. Now, I know this isn't '94 but it still would be nice to hear him do it proper, especially since he did in '08. Overall, the show was surprisingly awesome. I underestimated them to say the least. The new songs were "meh" inducing , but they played enough other shit to make up for it. Other highlights included: Missing a row of seats in front of us so we had tons of room. The seat we picked on the floor was coincidentally next to a freidnly middle aged guy who had REALLY good stuff. Getting away with smoking that stuff (MoSun Arena security is so tight, if you even flick a lighter they see it and swarm you within seconds)! Seriously it would have been easier to read the Hebrew Bible in Auschwitz than it is to smoke, mosh, or party in Mohegan Sun. After we did that I realized my wallet was missing. We had been on the floor for 20 minutes but when I went back up to the old seats, there it was in all it's leathery glory. Bonus! So yeah, if you're on the fence about this show I recomend going especially if the price is right. |

Their cover of Dancing Days is very cool. Is that the first time you've heard that? The radio played the crap out of it awhile back when STP released it. That's very cool set. Especially Still Remains which has always been one of my favorites. Also, a very cool song trio to open the show. The crowd must've went nuts for that.
I actually haven't heard the new album yet. Is it any good?
