You obviously cannot have an outside concert in Kansas City without it being ungodly hot. When you cram a few thousand people together, that just makes it worse. And I was wearing my newly acquired all black Phobia shirt! (Hey, at least someone recognized the band.) It was worth it in the end: I doubt I'll be seeing Ben Folds at City Market again. The latter half of the show had an influx of high school-age kids who would scream and talk loudly to eachother, do drugs, and make real concert-goers miserable. Never thought I'd say this, but I wish tonight would've been 21+. Too much hassle, but some of the performers were great.

I walked into the oven known as City Market as Crash Kings were about halfway done with their set. They sound like they are tailor made for current alternative radio. Their just seemed soulless to me. The bass player had some awesome talent, though, but I will write this band off as being unknowns in a few years.

For so long, I've gotten Against Me! and Rise Against confused with one another. I think I saw Rise Against at Warped Tour in 2008, so this was my first time seeing Against Me! and they were pretty fun. It was weird to hear their keyboards so prominent in otherwise straight-up melodic punk songs, but it was just fine overall. They didn't do a lot of talking in between songs, but the crowd was pretty receptive of them. I'd like to see them again in a smaller venue.

Thirty years after the fact, Devo is amazing live and as relevant as ever. In this day and age where the next dime-a-dozen electroclash (or whatever) artist gets popular only to fade away in the coming months, Devo remind all the young hipsters how it's done. At times with three keyboardists, they played an infection brand of New Wave that was as much fun to listen to as it was to dance to. I never knew Devo had such an awesome discography of songs; "Whip It" was probably the lowlight of the set, even though it was still awesome! They need to come back.

During Devo, the crowd was definitely full of older people, although everyone loved them. After them, though, there was an influx of younger kids, about high school age. They must've came for Silversun Pickups. The band used a predictable formula, but wasn't nearly as bad as I thought they would be. They definitely knew how to rock out at times, but some other times they were just droning and annoying.

Seventh time seeing Ben Folds. The sound was off for the first few songs and the crowd was horrendous during that time as well, but it got substantially better as time went on. Crowd interaction was at a minimum until the staples like Army, Not The Same, Annie Waits, etc. The crowd also did the female vocals on You Don't Know Me, which I thought was great, probably the best version I've heard live. Ben did a minimalist/maraca version of the already B-side of Bitch Went Nutz and pulled off an impressive drum solo after Steven's Last Night In Town. A huge shame he had to play such a short set - shortest I've ever seen him do. He deserves to play a full show at somewhere like the Uptown Theater or Liberty Hall again; I'd even take Crossroads again. But after all was said and done, I was satisfied. Partly because of Ben Folds, but mostly from the awesome surprise named Devo.

They came out in grey suits and masks. Took off the masks after the opening song, put on black t-shirts and wore those Devo upside-down flower pot hats, except they were blue. Threw a couple out in the audience as well. Went backstage and came back in the classic yellow plastic suit that said "Devo" on them. Started to tear them off as the show went on. Was totally awesome. They ruled and were the best band of the night.

I enjoyed Silversun Pickups when they opened for Muse.

Fun fact: there was a moshpit during Against Me! and at least one crowd-surfer (mostly more) for every act after Crash Kings.
