Most of us "true metalheads" like to envision ourselves as denim and leather back patch metal-heads. That a scene. Just as much of a scene as hipsters, punks, juggalos, and crunkcores.

Belonging to a scene because it's what you truly believe and where you generally belong is NOT a bad thing in my opinion. However those who conform just for the sake of fitting into a predetermined mold are assholes. That happens just as much with metal as with every other subculture and community.

But scenes are more interested in keeping themselves alive like a gang or mafia contingent rather than being critical of their art or moving forward.

That's not necessarily what I think. I think being active in a scene is supporting the scene, not just dressing and hanging out with certain people. People who do that are scene kids.
