It's not an album, but you should check out Deafheaven's demo. A lot of bands are really searching for their niche in that blackier Alcest sort of place, and I think Deafheaven have found it. It seems right up your alley.

Found it. I'll let you know what I think.

EDIT: "Libertine Dissolves" is pretty great, but it's gonna need better production for the more subtle parts to really shine.

This is one of the cooler 'new' things (bands rather) I've heard lately. Definitely gonna remember to check em out if they put out a full nondemo release at some point.

For sure, I just saw them live on Friday and was really surprised we had a band like that in the area.

I know they plan on releasing a full length soon. If they do, I'll post it up here.

Recently got The Epigenesis by Melechesh, it's pretty good. Ritual Abuse by Cough came in the mail the other day. Holy shit, it's pretty awesome. Seriously sounds like a cross of Burning Witch and early Electric Wizard. Picked up Unrelenting by Phobia today. It's great too, 15 minutes of grind, motherfucker.

I was kind of shocked at what a bad year Relapse had. This will be the first year since I've been making year-end lists (in 2004, bitches) that they haven't had an entry on my top ten.

A Relapse band worth checking out would be Cough, man. I don't know how much you're into doom, but I'm absolutely loving their newest album.

I'll look into it, but when I hear doom I think of Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride, which I love, not Electric Wizard and Sleep, which bores me senseless.

I kinda like Cough. Funny though when my buddy played it for me I thought it was his band
