Now, on the subject of musicians, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts regarding entire bands, where each member is a top-notch musician at their respective position. Not necessarily a band of virtuosos, but a whole bunch of great players that make for one superb band. In some cases this can be a band with really no incredible players, but just a group of musicians that gels so incredibly well. Singers are encouraged to be included in this equation.

Well, Iron Maiden is the obvious one for me. I wouldn't put any individual member in my top 5 for that instrument (maybe Steve, maybe Bruce, probably neither) but as a unit they're the greatest band on the planet.

IMO i'd have to say Symphony X, Protest The Hero, and Kalmah.

Alright, I'll try guitarists.

Jeff Loomis - Only guy who does that Guitar World fanboy jerkoff bullshit that I actually like, because he still writes kickass songs.
Karl Sanders - Egyptian influence + lightspeed tech death + he has to sing=amazing
Dimebag Darrell - In an elite class of dudes whose riffs are as good as their solos and visa versa. R.I.P.
Mikael Åkerfeldt - Can't put a finger on one reason why but he's definitely my biggest musical hero.
Neige - Anyone who has made as many bands great as he has deserves a nod.
David Gilmour - Favorite soloist (not metal? Fuck you, not metal)
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray - Definitely both at their best when they share a band with the other.
Tony Iommi - Best riff writer ever, sorry.
