I based mine more on the number of songs each band has that I like. Bands like Slayer, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Ozzy/Sabbath, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc... all really only have a hand full of songs that I like. I really wouldn't have a top 25 if I didn't put the 1-2 album bands in

Just depends on how good those albums are.

Masterplan and Redemption both have only 4 albums but are undoubtedly top 20 material for me, because I find them each to have at least two 9/10 albums - probably three. And that's out of only 4 albums total. 3 GREAT albums is pretty much the "entry" into my top 20. I'm not talking about albums I really like, but albums I love - album-of-the-year (or at least top 5)contenders for their given year(s) of release. If a band doesn't have at least 2 or 3 of those albums total, no matter how many albums they have, I won't give them a second thought for this list (unless it's a band who has released like 8-10 very good albums over a long stretch of time, because that sort of consistency is hard to find). Therefore bands with less than 3 albums are pretty much automatically out.

Something like that. I'm gonna update my list soon.

Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Rush
Judas Priest
Chevelle
3 Doors Down
Shinedown
Mastodon
Rise Against
Goo Goo Dolls
Death
Kreator
Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell
Foo Fighters
Machine Head
Muse
Stone Temple Pilots
The Eagles
Boston
Alice In Chains
Gojira
Pearl Jam

Not necessarily in order, and not all metal. I might make an all-metal one later.

The only one that holds an actual spot is Frank Zappa, so everything after him is in no particular order.

1. Frank Zappa
2. Pink Floyd
3. Rush
4. Dream Theater
5. Death
6. Atheist
7. Iron Maiden
8. Pestilence
9. Primus
10. Augury
11. Return to Forever
12. King Crimson
13. Phish
15. Funkadelic
14. moe.
15. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
16. Miles Davis
17. Yes
18. Igor Stravinsky
19. Edgar Varese
20. Origin
21. Kreator
22. Carcass

1. Iron Maiden
2. Metallica
3. Megadeth
4. Therion
5. Iced Earth
6. Pain of Salvation
7. Soundgarden
8. Nevermore
9. Dream Theater
10. Symphony X
11. Orphaned Land
12. Dio
13. Savatage
14. Black Sabbath (only beat Ozzy cause of Dio, ironically enough)
15. Ozzy
16. Slayer
17. Led Zeppelin
18. Testament
19. Green Carnation
20. Blind Guardian
21. Judas Priest
22. Opeth
23. Death
24. Queen
25. Alice in Chains

Just missing the list was Queensryche.
Not included were collaboration or side project bands. Such as Temple of the Dog, Avantasia, Demons and Wizards, Control Denied and TSO.

I see a distinct lack of Therion in all these top 25 lists. Which makes me wonder if that many people have actually even heard them. Even though Metallica has had 4 masterpieces, 2 very good, 2 mediocre albums and 1 horrific they still rank 2 for me because of the quality of their masterpieces. Maiden may not have any album quite so fantastically compelling to me but they have been remarkably consistent throughout the years. Thats why they got the top spot.
