I get what you're saying, but yes, actually. Their last two albums have actually had some decent riffs in them. As evidence on the new one, I would cite both Ephemeral (opening riff) and especially The Creeper (check out about 1:30 into the track). Very rifftastic in places, believe it or not. Plus all the heavy sludge is still there, too - to me, this shows how they've evolved. Not everybody can do both within a song or album, but Pelican can. Lucky us.

I wasn't blown away by the Red Album. I thought it was good, not great. Not up to the hype.

The Blue Record, though, is outstanding. I think it's twice the album Red Album is. The songs are just so much better -- better riffs, better melodies, better arrangements.

"Swollen and Halo" is song-of-the-year material.
