Metal vs. Strawberry Shortcake
I recently was invited to do a feature blog for the parenting section of AnnArbor.com, which is the online replacement for Ann Arbor's daily newspaper which folded last month. My latest post concerns efforts to get the kids headbanging, with mixed success. If you're interested:

Haha, this was interesting. Hopefully they'll come around to the better music eventually.

Are you nuts? I'd be more surprised if there wasn't a Tom Waits album in his picture.

Good stuff, Scott. I'm sure that, despite your older daughter's dislike of Maiden, you're immensely proud of her avid reading. It'd be nice if she liked both, though
I have no doubt that when I have kids, the hip and awesome music I like will be about as cool to them as Michael Bolton. That's just how things work. It reminds me about Patton Oswalt's bit about his future kids and how he's going to be the most boring dad ever: "When I'm a dad, the most recent CD I'll own will be Phil Collins' No Jacket Required. 'Oh, you like rock? Well this is rockin' good stuff!'"

I have a similar experience. When I got into Iron Maiden, DIO, and Helloween (when I was 13/14) my 3 brothers were somewhere between 4 and 8. To this day, anytime I play Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast, Judas, Holy Diver, or Stand Up and Shout, they join in on the chorus and air drum. Its pretty cool, in my opinion. But outside of those few songs that I force fed them at a young age, they hate most of the music I like, and instead spin Now 31, Lil Wayne, and Soulja Boy. Oh well. They're still in elementary school, so I don't expect them to like good music, but its definitely disheartening to know that you tried to expose them to quality, but they prefer lesser stuff.
Good read, though. |
