Judas Priest -- Concord, CA -- July 31st, 2009

Not much to report here.

The opener sounded like a wannabe Nickleback. I'll leave it at that.

Whitesnake was mediocre. They hit the stage with a lot of energy, Coverdale wailed during the whole set, but either I really don't get Whitesnake or most of their songs do sound the same. By the time they reached the finale of "Still of the Night" (which was the only song I was looking forward to hearing), the band seemed a little sluggish and the music reflected so.

Priest was great as always. I wouldn't be surprised (or disappointed) if "Rapid Fire" became a staple as long as they continue touring. With the gems we wouldn't have heard otherwise come a few tracks we don't really need to hear live again, or at all in the first place. The crowd took "You Don't Have to be Old to be Wise" like it was the first pee break song. I'd estimate 4/5 Maiden fans on this site don't want to hear Run or NotB the next time they come to town, and I now feel the same way about "Breaking the Law", "Living After Midnight" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'".

"The Rage" and "Steeler" came to the rescue at the end of the album portion of the set, and I noticed that Halford looked more alive and electric than I had ever seen. Let's hope this sticks and we get a Sad Wings 35th anniversary tour in a couple more years.
Tonight was the first time I'd ever heard "The Ripper" live, and it was a hell of a gem. They followed with "Prophecy" and "Hell Patrol", the only variation from previous sets. Almost everything else tonight seemed insignificant after "Victim of Changes", and that's about all I can say about that.

After the encore, I was a little disappointed with "Freewheel Burning", whether wit was due to sound or just not translating live. They capped the show with the electric version of "Diamonds and Rust" and again, a song that should be renamed "You've Gotta Be Kiddin' Me".

I went to Walmart yesterday and kept singing "Into the black hole, searching for Tacos"! And my wife thought I was going crazy! I did find some though, some little El Charito Mini Tacos!
