Behold! The Monolith -- Los Angeles, CA -- July 19th, 2014

Kickass show. Great bands and cool people to be sure. Got to have fun exchanges with Manic Mike and Manic Jimmy, the Grindsister and Grindrique and Tonelord Matt, which made coming out to the show solo totally worth it.

Got to the Five Star Bar in time to catch Gravehill. When I first saw them at Tidal Wave 2012, I didn't dig them at all. Maybe my taste in music has just changed over the years, but I fricken loved them this time. So many killer riffs all in a classic death metal package. Singer Mike Abominator had to stay on the floor because of the small stage, and he actually slipped and fell because someone dropped a beer. The band sounded super tight and totally killer though, drummer Thorgrimm is beast.

01. Death Curse
02. At Hell's Command
03. Open Their Throats
04. Feat the Reaper
05. Crucified
06. Rites of the Pentagram
07. Ravager
08. Devil Worshiper

Next up was Behold! The Monolith. This was their first show with their new singer and the band was just heavy as fuck. The new guy had a huge amount of range in his voice and fit in the band just perfectly. The new song they played was hella NWOBHMey and it sounded awesome. Matt Price might be the heaviest guitarist I've seen in LA, just a total monster riffer. The set was just incredibly awesome, and I am super stoked for the third album.

01. Cast on the Black/Lamentor/Guided by the Southern Cross
02. We are the Worm
03. New Song
04. Redeemist

Last up was Sons of Satan, an awesome Venom tribute band with Matt from B!tM on guitar, Thorgrimm from Gravehill on drums and Menno from Lightning Swords of Death on bass/vocals. Once again, the band sounded fantastic. The combination of Matt's super old-school tone and Menno's freakishly Cronos-like vocals just totally worked. Like, this is probably the best way to hear Venom songs played live unless you're lucky enough to catch Mpire of Evil.

01. Seven Gates of Hell
02. Welcome to Hell
03. Bursting Out
04. Warhead
05. Witching Hour
06. Don't Burn the Witch
07. Leave Me in Hell
08. Bloodlust
09. In League With Satan
10. Black Metal
12. Acid Queen
13. Countess Bathory

How did Mike sound live? I haven't seen Gravehill for a few years now and was surprised by how horrendous he sounds on the new album. It seems as if his voice has just deteriorated.

I dunno, kind of like his between song high pitched growly voice but more incomprehensible I guess? I'll give their stuff a listen then get back to you on that. His voice definitely wasn't the appealing part of the set to me, but I didn't think at any point that it was bad or anything.
