3. The first track doesn't feel like a first track
Tree of Suffocating Souls is groundbreaking opener.

I agree; Tree of Suffocating Souls is a fine enough opener. Maybe not as foreboding as Goetia was but that's fine. My bigger problem was that Waiting wasn't a very strong closer. It was a cool song but it was more of an "album track" to me. I don't know why they didn't end with Black Snow. It was on in the background while I was on the computer and I thought for sure that had to be the last song. I was really surprised when another one started up. I thought In the Sleep of Death was the end of the album too.

I'm too hung-up on comparing the ending to the Prolonging and that's just not a fair thing to do. But that song just left me floored.

I never got a full appreciation for the first album until I listened to it pretty drunk the day after my first son was born. That was a pretty life altering day. That won't be happening again with this album. So I need some drinks to get my head right in to this album.

Guys, take a look at the comments section of MetalSucks' review of this album. SHE LIVES.

also this album is rule. I'm not too worked up over comparing this one to the debut too much as well. MC is a damn great album, and it's a badass followup to ED. I see it like the RtL->MoP scenario. The debut is superior, but MD came out just when we had exhausted our listens of ED and needed something new. I think it accomplished that goal in spades, and both of these albums will be seen as classics.

The album was a definite grower for me. I listened to it a couple times and thought it sucked. I ended up sticking it in my car and listening to it four or five times in the span of a weekend and loved it.

I gave it another listen today in my car where I could focus on it more (fuck paying attention to the road). I enjoyed it a lot more but I don't think it's album of the year material. Just a very, very good follow-up, like Onioner said. Like the last album and Monotheist I like the songs where they slow down a lot more. And any with the female vocals.

Aurorae may actually be my favorite song. I really like the guitar work during the intro (which is half the song). It does feel like a "filler song" though.

I'm still not sold on Waiting as a closer. The female vocals are awesome, and the piano at the three minute mark was really awesome since it's the same piano from My Pain (my favorite song off the first album). So that tied the two songs together. But the guitar solo feels out of place. It's too clean. I think that should have been either an album track or (better) a bonus track. It's just a very anti-climactic closer and I think that's one of the reasons I'm not as high on the album as I wanted to be.

My Pain gives me chills every time. "for fear of waking up and you are... gone"

I'm really digging V. Santura's vocals during In the Sleep of Death. I'd say I wished he did more vocals on the new album but I think what little he does adds a lot of dramatic effect.
