Impaled -- Oakland, CA -- April 19th, 2014

This was technically day 2 of the Brainsqueeze fest, but Impaled is the only band that played this day that I have a setlist for.

Began with heading out to 1-2-3-4 Go! Records in Oakland to see Ghoul and Occultist play a free in-store show. Occultist killed, much much better than the show at the Roxy last Sunday. Ghoul was next, and they played an all-surf set with their new guitarist Ben, who is one hell of a cool guy. The surf set was actually really awesome, I really hope Ghoul do a full surf album at some point.

01. The End
02. The Midnight Ride of the Cannibals MC
03. Kreeg
04. Sidehackers
05. Hang Ten
06. Blood on the Street
07. Death in the Swamp
08. Baron Samedi
09. Transmission Zero
10. Psychoplasm
11. It Was a Very Good Year

Then it was time for the Metro for the rest of Brainsqueeze. First band I walked in and saw was Kicker. They're like if cranky old people played British punk, they were actually pretty sick. After them was The Shrine. I spent their set backstage kicking it with my pals at the show.

Next was the big one, Impaled with Leon del Muerte back on vocals. Impaled are known for having fucked up sets regularly. To say that they're an inconsistent live band is an understatement. Well some magic happened a few hours ago. Impaled went and played the best set I have seen all year. Like seriously, holy fuck. There was something seriously special about this set- everyone in the band was in total top form and the audience was going ballistic. The songs sounded brutal as fuck and just heavy as shit. The tempos were just right, the mix was beautiful and the setlist was awesome. Jason's guitar got messed up for the end of Trocar and Spirits of the Dead but Jesus Christ the set was still amazing. Raw death metal power, that is all I can say. Minor note, del Muerte is an incredibly badass frontman. Even Sean McGrath, who is always way too hard on himself after sets, was grinning ear to ear after this one. Everyone knew that Impaled stole the entire fucking show, if not the entire festival. Everyone I spoke to afterwards agreed that the set was amazing and that Impaled had basically annihilated for ~35 minutes. Fucking incredible.

01. Faeces of Death
02. Flesh & Blood
03. Trocar
04. Spirits of the Dead
05. Faecal Rites
06. All That Rots
07. Bloodbath

Next was Fucked Up. I don't get the hype at all. I just saw a fat guy jumping around to the sound of standard punk. Negative Approach were fricken sweet. Gonna have to check them out. Municipal Waste did their thing and were fun.

Said my goodbyes and now I'm here. Might have a final show tomorrow, but my body is saying fuck that. Onioner out.

Just as an FYI Thou are playing a show in SJ tonight for $6
But they're also doing a matinee in Oakland at 3 I think.

Definitely gonna catch Thou in LA on Thursday, so I'll be seeing them play this tour at least. I don't think I can pull of an SJ trip tonight man haha, and I think I'm actually show'd out for the weekend, otherwise I'd hit the Tankcrimes thing at Eli's. Godflesh would be cool, but I'd be the poser who went to see them for the sake of seeing them. Never heard a note before. Just gonna spend tonight photo gathering for my next article, gotta wake up at 5 AM for my flight back.

Haha for sure. And it's not exactly a bad thing to go see a band to go see them. If anything, more people should do that. They get a good show and the musicians get more money in their pocket.

Man that's awesome that Leon is back on vocals! Reading that makes me miss Progeria. I saw them at the Blvd randomly and Leon was on lead vocals and Aimee from Bastard Noise was playing guitar and backup vocals. Such good grind.

Yup, Leon's gonna sing with them for as long as they support the re-recording of Dead Shall Dead Remain. He was just on fire with his vocals last night, he got so stoked that he did a stagedive at the end but everyone collapsed under him haha.
