Meshuggah 25

Quote:
A quarter century of deviance

You try to wrap your head around it but comprehension fails - it's been twentyfive years since the first official Meshuggah release!!! The selftitled (though often referred to as "Psykisk testbild") EP came out on the small local Umeň label Garageland Records in 1989, making 2014 the big TWO FIVE for the band!! Hoooly s**t!!

Who would have thought huh!? - That our small group of young guys would get to - not only write and record our own quirky, deviant style of metal - but that we would still be doing it a quarter century later, making our living off of what we love to do!! Now in our forties we can't but look back at it jawdropped and baffled at the fact!!

We always set out to do something new, something different from the music we heard around us - something that would be a challenge to ourselves to write, learn and perform. Something truly unique. Looking back at our career we feel that we have actually been successful in doing just that!!

We have for so many years been blessed with a super loyal fanbase and a still-growing one at that, allowing us to continue to create freely and without boundaries! For this we sincerely thank all of our fans that have stood by us all this time!!!

To commemorate this great anniversary we have a few different cool things coming out in 2014! Those will include among other things a few official releases, but as to not completely kill the suspense immediately, we will come back with more info on that during the winter and spring. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news on this in the next few months, on our official site as well as MySpace/F.B etc.

One thing we can announce at this time though is that we will be doing a few select "25th Anniversary" festival dates both European and in North America, out of which one will be us closing the Marquee stage at Graspop festival with a special 25th anniversary set on Sunday 29th of June! More info on additional dates will soon follow!

I'll stop blathering now. Just want to say, from all of us in the band to all people whose support keeps us going strong still : THANK YOU!!! And here's to another 25!!

Twenty-one minutes for one song is a bit of a stretch, though, don't you think? I mean, they did perform IDIL/IDID on the last tour, which is about fifteen minutes' worth of playing non-stop, but if they're going to build a mammoth set list like they're saying they are, then putting marathon songs like that in there is a bit ambitious. I mean, they did say they're in their 40's now.

If they were to play, say three or four songs each from (1) Contradictions / None, (2) DEI, (3) Chaosphere, (4) Nothing, (5) obZen and (6) Koloss, that would still be about 18-21 songs or more, which would easily be two hours' worth of material. I couldn't ask for much more than that, even in a wet dream.

They've said on multiple occasions that they can't play I live, as much as everyone would wanna hear it.

For Catch 33, they could do Shed or something.

But unless they don't play Minnesota, I have nothing to complain about. I've seen Meshuggah twice and both sets were completely different sans Bleed and ILID/IDID.

When I go to vote, I wonder if I should pick personal favorites or deep / rare cuts? I feel like this is an opportunity to hear some rare stuff, but that I'd just be throwing my vote away if I cast it for something like "Vanished" or "Concatenation". It sucks we get only one vote per album, or this question wouldn't matter as much.

At any rate, if I were voting for deep cuts / rare tracks, my list would be:

Contradictions / None: Gods of Rapture
Destroy Erase Improve: Vanished
Chaosphere: Corridor of Chameleons
Nothing: Spasm
obZen: obZen
Koloss: Marrow

If I were voting for personal favorites, my list would be:

Contradictions / None: Humiliative
Destroy Erase Improve: Soul Burn
Chaosphere: New Millennium Cyanide Christ
Nothing: Stengah
obZen: Pravus
Koloss: Swarm

My votes were:
Paralyzing Ignorance
Ritual
Beneath
Concatenation
Straws
Bleed
Behind the Sun

Sort of a mix between what I'd really like to hear and what my vote will actually count towards. Kind of stupid that the demo is included but whatever.
But wtf no Catch 33? My vote would be In Life/In Death and that's the only song that would make sense to do so hopefully they at least do that again.
