Mastodon -- Sydney, Australia -- February 24th, 2014

This was a sidewave from the main Soundwave festival this year. Originally it was advertised as "full headline sets" from each band, with 60 minutes allocated to each. Bit shitty when it turned out that Gojira and Baroness were only getting 30 / 45 each (shorter than their festival sets).

All bands put on great shows, particularly Baroness (they had had technical difficulties the day before & were a bit lacklustre). Good to see Trampled Under Hoof back in the Mastodon set too!

Gojira (30 mins)

Explosia
Flying Whales
Backbone
The Heaviest Matter of the Universe
L'Enfant Sauvage
Toxic Garbage Island

Baroness (45 mins)

Green Theme
Take My Bones Away
March to the Sea
A Horse Called Golgotha
Cocainium
Board Up the House
The Line Between
Eula
Isak

Mastodon (75 mins)

Black Tongue
Divinations
Crystal Skull
Trampled Under Hoof
Dry Bone Valley
Megalodon
Thickening
Oblivion
Stargasm
Blasteroid
Crack the Skye
All the Heavy Lifting
Spectrelight
Bedazzled Fingernails
Iron Tusk
March of the Fire Ants
Blood and Thunder

It's still crazy to me that Baroness is billed higher than Gojira.

Yeah, there's still plenty to gripe about. 1 song from Blood Mountain? Do we still need Oblivion? But the addition of tracks like Divinations and TRAMPLED UNDER HOOF is awesome!

What's to understand? Baroness is a greater draw than Gojira in North America (and pretty much anyplace that's not Europe) any day of the week. It has nothing to do with number of albums or artistic merit (not that Baroness would lose on that last note anyway). It's all about fan appeal.

Of course, three 75-minute sets from each of these bands would be the best.
