The courses just don't have that "je ne sais quois" that the earlier ones had. It just doesn't have that originallity that the original SNES version (or especially the N64 version) had. My biggest gripe with anything Nintendo the last ten years is it's always the same. Same characters, same environments, same concepts, nothing new. Case in point for Mario Kart Wii; half the levels are from the past Mario Karts.

And the handling sucks.

Well, I am sure there are only so many things you can do with track design and it is hard to keep coming up with truly original tracks. I know the hand held versions also recycled some tracks but they were still fun to play. I use the Game Cube controller (because I am old) and the game play is great. However, my son does just fine with the Wii controller and we have played the game quite a bit over the years.

I didn't mention that my son has never played a video game before and spent most of the time driving in circles or ramming Goombas.

But playing this one just made me want to play the N64 version. I think the series peaked then.

I actually hooked up my N64 and started my son out on that version first, when he was younger. Then we worked our way up from there. We still play the N64 version on occasion.

By the way, we both love Mario Kart 7 as well.
