Alestorm -- Portland, OR -- November 15th, 2013

Back Through Time
In the Navy (cover)

Captain Morgan's Revenge
Rum

The pirates pulled into Portland a few hours ago and it certainly appeared that everyone had a great time. Alestorm must have really grown in popularity this past year as I saw them almost exactly one year ago in this same venue opening for Epica and it appeared there were more people here tonight.

In the Navy was a surprise cover song but it worked quite well and the crowd sang along with gusto. I think the show had some pacing problems though as it seemed like the entire show should have ended at one or two different points during Captain Morgan's Revenge but kept going instead. It was cool for the lead singer Chris to crowdsurf all the way back to the bar at the very end of the show and the raucous crowd helped him along well. His voice was too far down in the mix though, at least where I was standing but I knew all the words anyway, along with the rest of the crowd it seemed. I was surprised in this day and age to see crowd members with plastic prop swords and guns. To paraphrase a poster back when this tour was first announced, see this show if you like fun. Don't see it if you don't.

The fun hater returns! Hope you enjoyed Trollfest, I caught the last half of their set and didn't like them so much. Maybe I hate fun too

IMHO Trollfest is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fun and goofy than Alestorm :p

The sound at the Seattle show SUCKED ASS. All the songs started out very rough, then after the first chorus or so they'd get back on beat with each other. It was obvious they were having a hard time hearing on stage

Was stoked that they played the Britney Spears cover though!

Also, the first local band on our show was this straight up folk band with washboards and everything, it was SOOOO AWESOME. They weren't the best, but definitely will be great in time.

Speaking of folk and fun.... Wrecking Crew, do you know of a band from down there called Dirty Kid Discount? I saw them at a punk fest here in Seattle a couple months back and they were a kick ass Folk-Punk band, I believe they said they were from Portland..... anyway, So fucking fun!

I haven't heard of them but that might be because I live in Boise, not Portland. My mom lives in the Portland area so I go there once or twice a year when there are shows I am interested in and Overkill/my mom's birthday/Alestorm last week seemed like a good trip to take. I will keep a lookout for Dirty Kid Discount since a lot of Seattle/Portland groups play here as well. It would be nice if more national tours stopped by though.

Sorry to hear that you live in Boise.
I ended up going to the show in SF because a friend had an extra ticket. I'm not really a fan of the folk/pirate/whatever thing but for everything I heard about Alestorm, I wasn't particularly impressed. It didn't help that it was about as late as a headliner could play in the state of California, but I thought Trollfest was way more entertaining. Took me about 2 times through the chorus to realize that they were playing Britney Spears' Toxic.
