Nine Inch Nails -- Raleigh, NC -- October 22nd, 2013

Source: my cousin and his wife, who were fortunate enough to be able to attend
Venue: PNC Arena

Godspeed You! Black Emperor set:

1. drone (film: hope scrawl)
2. Mladic (film: religious images, war criminals, type print, machine schematics, medicine, film burn)
3. East Hastings (film: police, the man on the bench, red light at the window, stock ticker, protestors ushered by police, traffic, some new shots of protests, ads, police)

GY!BE were given 30 minutes to open. The following are my cousin's remarks about the opening set he sent me between sets.

The drones were so much better. Hard to describe... I could pick out more instruments but you could still feel the power. Maybe it was mixed better. Mladic was not as good as I remember; still amazing, and that part about 10 minutes in when they slow into a power sludge thing is seriously one of the more moving moments of a dog that I've experienced... gets me every time. I couldn't hear the violin or bass well at all though. It was just LOUD. WFFP was as good as I've ever heard. Absolutely amazing. It was mixed well and powerful, almost like it was meant to be played in an arena (I feel dirty saying that). The drones here were absolutely flooring. Loud, but with accents of melody peppered in briefly (not enough to stop it from being a smack in the face of noise).

The film has some new additions, including, I think, a little message on Obamacare. Overall, 3 songs (well... 2 and a drone) is disappointing for a GY!BE concert... especially after a few long, amazing journeys. It felt like it was just getting turned up, and they quit. But what they did do was as good as I can remember.

Nine Inch Nails set:

1. Copy of A
2. 1,000,000
3. Terrible Lie
4. March of the Pigs
5. Piggy
6. All Time Low
7. Disappointed
8. Came Back Haunted
9. Find My Way
10. Sanctified
11. The Frail
12. The Wretched
13. The Big Come Down
14. Survivalism
15. Running
16. A Warm Place
17. Somewhat Damaged
18. Wish
19. The Hand That Feeds
20. Head Like a Hole

Encore:

21. Even Deeper
22. In This Twilight
23. While I'm Still Here
24. Black Noise
25. Hurt

No remarks given about the NIN set. I'm assuming this is the standard for the tour.

Looks like a pretty rotten setting for this type of show...

I'm seeing the Atlanta show in 2 days; can someone explain GY!BE to me? I dunno why, but I assumed they were just a typical drone band. There's a film aspect?

They've become increasingly drone prone live recently. That doesn't really reflect the material recorded on their albums, but it does reflect their philosophy.

And yes, the film projections are a pretty integral part of their show. Here's a video that has some decent footage of one:

That looks awesome. Their tour with Neurosis makes a lot of sense now.

I wish it was a tour.

The NIN set is usually pretty much the same with 4 songs or so being switched up night to night.
The two shows I saw Godspeed had 40 minute sets.
