What Year Dominates Your Music Collection?

I was having a conversation with someone else on a different thread a few weeks ago about how awesome 1994 was in terms of the number of awesome albums released in that calendar year. It got me thinking, what year dominates my music collection? So I went through all my compact discs (and full digital albums) and figured out what year it is for me. Like I said, I included digital albums since I paid for all of them, save the ones that were offered for free (zero piracy). But I DIDN’T include compilations, greatest hits or soundtracks because those all have songs that were recorded over multiple years. And I didn’t include live albums since they all include songs that were recorded earlier. And I have quite a few single songs that I’ve purchased off iTunes but I didn’t include them either. I do have a lot of re-releases but I based their years off the albums original release dates. And I also included all my video game soundtracks and the few remix albums I have. I went by memory for a lot of them and iTunes for pretty much everything else. But I think I’m pretty accurate. I’m not going to post EVERY album, just the years and how many albums came out of that year. If anyone is interested in going through the full list I could post it.

Nine hundred and thirty four albums in total.

1966: 1
1967: 2
1969: 1
1970: 2
1971: 1
1972: 1
1973: 2
1975: 2
1979: 1
1980: 1
1981: 1
1982: 1
1983: 3
1984: 3
1985: 2
1986: 4
1987: 7
1988: 9
1989: 9
1990: 17
1991: 27
1992: 34
1993: 32
1994: 46
1995: 41
1996: 40
1997: 45
1998: 32
1999: 51
2000: 32
2001: 37
2002: 33
2003: 33
2004: 37
2005: 45
2006: 45
2007: 49
2008: 30
2009: 32
2010: 36
2011: 32
2012: 40
2013: 35

By Decade:
1960's: 4
1970's: 9
1980's: 40
1990's: 365
2000's: 373
2010's: 143

I'm not surprised that 1999 came out on top. Even though metal was lower on the radar that year there were a lot of really good albums that came out. Non-metal ones too. I probably bought half those albums in 1999. I bought a shitload of CD's that year. I was surprised by 1995, 1997 and 2005 having so many. I remember when those years ended thinking that not too much good stuff had came out. But I probably bought eighty percent of the albums from those years in the years afterwards. 1996, 2006 and 2007 were some good years too (and 1994, obviously). I remember thinking that even back when those years ended. I'm surprised that 2000 was so low. And I was really surprised that I only have fifty three albums that pre-date 1990.

Tie between 1988 and 1990 with ten albums each.

Oh fuck this, I can't imagine myself finding the time to even go through my almost 200 gb of music.

I always thought 1996 was a good year for music.

If we can count digital stuff we didn't pay for (promos), I'm at 75 for 2013. Otherwise, I'm at 61 for 1988.

Edit: iTunes tells me 1185 albums, but my iPod tells me 1202 albums (they have the same number of songs though). I also have about 15 more CDs to rip to my computer, and a few of them are from the 80's, so it's hard to say. '88 should still win out though.

I certainly wouldn't.

I agree with stuff that's just stolen from bands, but it's a bit different for promos. I guess it's fair to say that the number would be much lower (closer to 40 or so) without the promos, but it's not like I'm downloading everything I can for the sake of having more 2013 records. These are things I find interesting and have reviewed (I delete them if I don't like them), and I still listen to them afterwards. Sometimes I'll go buy the CD after (just got the two new Rocka Rollas, new Blazon Stone, and new Razormaze after having promos of them for a while) if it's really good.

Yes, but it a) unfairly weights your collection in favour of the years you've been receiving promos, and b) isn't what you've necessarily chosen to spend your money on to add to your collection, which is the point of the thread. Personally, I buy the CD every digital promo I receive that I actually like.

That's aside from my own feeling that digital music isn't a collection
