Top Twenty AOR/Melodic Rock Albums Of All Time

I know a lot of people here might cringe when bands like Survivor, REO Speedwagon, or Asia, but AOR/Melodic Rock is a genre I am very fond of.The music has a great feel to it, and is very uplifting and catchy.I realize this thread will probably get bashed, and it will probably not even get viewed by a LOT of people, but I feel as though a list like this needs to be here.I will do the thread in a style similar to my glam metal revival album thread.

20.W.E.T. - W.E.T.

Tracklist:
1.Invincible
2.One Love
3.Brothers In Arms
4.Comes Down Like Rain
5.Running From The Heartache
6.I'll Be There
7.Damage Is Done
8.Put Your Money Where The Mouth Is
9.One Day At A Time
10.Just Go
11.My Everything
12.If I Fall

Released In 2009

At the number 20 spot we have a modern AOR classic, W.E.T.'s self-titled debut. It is the combination of some of the best AOR bands today, Work Of Art, Eclipse, and Talisman. This album is reminiscent of 80's AOR acts like Foreigner, Journey, and Asia, but also adds a modern rock touch to make things sound new and fresh. The vocals are outstanding, the guitars are thick and crystal clear, and the overall feel of the album is just incredible.Lovers of 80's AOR will love this record, but those who don't like the 80's bands are more likely to not like this record at all.Highlights include opener "Invincible", anthem "Brothers In Arms", and the Journey-esque "If I Fall"

The W.E.T. debut was an outstanding album. Love this cd. Second one was good but not as great as the first.

19.Hourglass - Millenium

Tracklist:
1.Power To Love
2.Wheels Are Turning
3.Hourglass
4.No More Miracles
5.Superstar
6.Rocket Ride
7.I Will Follow
8.I Still Believe
9.Masquerade
10.Chasing Time

Released In 2000

A fairly unknown newer AOR act, Millenium's "Hourglass" album is one of the greatest things that happened to the whole AOR genre, and it is definitely an album that sounded like it was made in 1984.Not to much info can be found for this album, and even band, so I wasn't able to find out who played on this album, but whoever did is OUTSTANDING.The vocalist sounds kinda like David Coverdale and the guitar player's riffs and tone remind me of TNT.This album is a real underrated gem that needs more recognition, so definitely give this a chance if you find the time. The highlights include the rifftastic "Wheels Are Turning", the incredible power ballad "I Still Believe", and the epic closer "Chasing Time".

18.Loud & Clear - Signal

Tracklist:
1.Arms Of A Stranger
2.Does It Feel Like Love
3.My Mistake
4.This Love, This Time
5.Wake Up You Little Fool
6.Liar
7.Could This Be Love
8.You Won't See Me Cry
9.Go
10.Run Into The Night

Released In 1989

Signal got to the 80's AOR scene a little late, releasing their debut album in 1989, and unfortunately never having any major success. This is by far one of the greatest AOR releases of all-time though, sounding a lot like Survivor. The guitars are executed with razor precision, the drums and bass are nothing spectacular, they just do what is needed, but the incredible vocals are the main highlight of this album. This album will probably be dissed by most of the people on this sight who decide to listen to it because of its overload of ballads, but since I love a good power ballad I can't help but eat this album up.If you like Survivor, you will almost definitely like this album, otherwise you might want to stay away.Highlights include opener "Arms Of A Stranger", the huge power ballad "Does It Feel Like Love", and the best guitar song on the album "My Mistake".

17.Paradise Theater - Styx

Tracklist:
1.A.D. 1928
2.Rockin' The Paradise
3.Too Much Time On My Hands
4.Nothing Ever Goes As Planned
5.The Best Of Times
6.Lonely People
7.She Cares
8.Snowblind
9.Half-Penny, Two-Penny
10.A.D. 1958
11.State Street Sadie

Released In 1981

Styx is probably the most legendary AOR band in the world (next to Journey of course), and this is by far their best work.Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung, and James Young all are extremely good singers, and Tommy's and James's guitar work on this album are some of their best.Dennis DeYoung, in a addition to being one of the vocalist, is also a phenomenal piano/keyboard player, and definitely in my top 5 keyboard/piano players of all time.Favorite Dennis song on this album vocally would definitely be the classic Styx ballad "The Best Of Times", and my favorite Tommy song vocally would have to be the other classic Styx song on this record "Too Much Time On My Hands".My favorite song overall though would have to be opener "Rockin' The Paradise" (killer song live). This album's deeper cuts are awesome as well, such as the anit-drug "Snowblind" and the rocker "Half-Penny, Two-Penny" featuring James Young on vocals.

16.Heart - Heart

Tracklist:
1.If Looks Could Kill
2.What About Love
3.Never
4.These Dreams
5.The Wolf
6.All Eyes
7.Nobody's Home
8.Nothin' At All
9.What He Don't Know
10.Shell Shock

Released In 1985

Heart was almost completely washed up by the time this album came out,They hadn't had a hit single or album in like 3 years at the time. But "What About Love" gets released and BAM! instant comeback. What a comeback album to, though probably not Heart's best album, it is by far their best album in the 80's, and it does have my favorite Heart song on it, the tru 80's classic "Never".Sure, most die-hard Heart fans probably think this record stinks, but this is truly a great piece of 80's AOR.Ann Wilson is by no doubt one of best female vocalists of all-time, and while her sister Nancy Wilson has some great vocals herself, the guitar is where she excels the most at.The hits the record is known for ("What About Love", "These Dreams", "Nothin At All, "Never") are all high-caliber singles, but this album also has some REALLY underrated gems like the upbeat, the more poppy 80's sounding "All Eyes" and the rocker "Shell Shock".Also the opener "If Looks Could Kill" is one heck of an opener and definitely the best opener Heart has ever used.If you love AOR you will like this, by no doubt, and if your a Heart fan it's really a toss up, because it depends on if you prefer the 70's Heart or the 80's Heart.

The best opening track from Heart? Seriously? Magic Man, Barracuda, Heartless, Cook With Fire, City's Burning, Who Will You Run To and Black On Black are all better songs. If Looks Could Kill is a decent tune but it is not their best album opener.

As for the album itself, I do like it. I was a kid when this album became huge and the hits off it were my introduction to Heart.

I thought someone would argue about the opener thing, but I seriously think it is."Magic Man" is to slow for an opener IMO.
