Eau Claire, WI eh?

Luckily it's only an hour from me, and it's also the same venue that George Carlin did his last Wisconsin standup show. I will be there.

dweezil is doing a guitar masterclass before a lot of the shows for $75
For the price of a fuzz pedal, learn techniques from the son of Frank Zappa. Dweezil Zappa's music camp, Dweezilla, has the motto "Learn And Destroy." It refers to destroying the boundaries that confine music creativity. At camp, students are in total immersion for 4 days of music instruction. While on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa, Dweezil will be previewing some of the guitar concepts he teaches at camp in a special event prior to each concert.

"I transformed my guitar technique before starting Zappa Plays Zappa out of necessity to play my dad's most sophisticated and challenging melodies. I've found a lot of exciting new approaches to the guitar. I started Dweezilla music camp as a way to share this information with guitarists. I'm excited to present an opportunity to share thoughts on my approach to guitar with students of all levels before each show on tour."
A 90 minute personalized guitar instruction session from Dweezil's annual musical bootcamp, Dweezilla, is being offered as a separate ticket in the afternoon before sound check in every city. Players of all skill levels are welcome to attend. "I really enjoy sharing musical ideas and improvisational strategies with people. In these classes we discuss technique and application as our main topics. People will also get a chance to have a close up look at the newly released Frank Zappa Roxy SG made by Gibson Guitars," notes Zappa.

I'm actually pretty excited for those shows! I'll try to attend as many of the three as I can.

I heard about this a few weeks ago. I'll probably pass on seeing them in Milwaukee this time though as I've seen ZPZ twice before.

The first time was at Summerfest in 2008 when Ray White was in the band, which was an incredible 90 minute tribute in technical skill and was a lot of fun to watch.

The second time was at Turner Hall in 2010 when they were doing Apostrophe in it's entirety. By that time Ray White had left the band and they had found unknown name Ben Thomas, who they made their singer after auditions. The band was still great in their technical skill but to me the show felt rehearsed to the point that it felt rigid, with hardly any spontaneity at all.

I'm not saying Ben Thomas is a bad singer, he gets the job done. But he doesn't have a lot of range, his voice is consistently lower. The band is still one of the few Frank Zappa tribute bands around (due to the complexity of his music) and it's definitely the tribute band that tours the most. So I still have all the respect in the world for Dweezil for keeping Frank's legacy alive and his band are still fabulous musicians. This time around, I'll probably save my money for another fall concert. Especially if Nine Inch Nails come to Milwaukee, I'll be able to see Adrian Belew live since he is going to be touring with them (he used to play for Frank Zappa and David Bowie, among others).
Upcoming concerts I'm attending-
Twenty One Pilots (January 31)
Green Day (March 30)
