King's X -- Asbury Park, NJ -- May 3rd, 2013

Amazing show as always by my favorite band for the past 24 years. dUg sounded great, despite the fact that as soon as this tour is over he is scheduled for a hernia operation. He mentioned that and also said that it would be a somewhat mellow set. It was in some ways but they were still on fire. And they played some surprising numbers, including a song from the Black Like Sunday record. dUg said "y'all remember the Black Like Sunday record. The one everyone hated." Well, I think it's a pretty decent record and definitely has some great tunes on it. I must be in the minority.

I was standing in front of Ty the whole show. He is amazing to watch. One great solo after another. The jam solos on Vegetable and Over My Head were mind-blowing! And since this was practically Jerry's hometown there were many chants of JERRY! JERRY! JERRY! throughout the night. He is still a madman behind the kit.

The band played from about 10pm til 11:45pm. After Dogman, which the crowd sang most of, the band were bowing when Jerry pulled them into a huddle and they decided to do one more song NOT on the set list. When they faced the mikes toward the crowd I knew it would be Goldilox!

After the show the band sat and greeted everyone. Something that most bands charge exorbitant VIP fees for the privilege of taking a photo with them. That's why KING'S X are, and will always remain, the coolest band EVER!

Some neat surprises in there for sure. Six or seven songs I've never seen them do before, 1 or 2 of which I don't particularly like/love, but hey, it's something different. Really, really hoping they play Goldilox in NYC tomorrow, I've had really awful luck with attempting to see it thus far.

Fuck yeah. The only negative for me is that they've been completely ignoring the Ogre Tones album.

Man that's a cool set, maybe one of these days I'll finally get to see them. Getting to see Ty shred on Everybody Knows A Little Bit Of Something must have been seriously awesome.

I have to agree. I love Ogre Tones and XV and the past 3 times I saw them they only do Go Tell Somebody from XV and nothing from Ogre Tones. Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous is another one they completely ignore.

Though it's got a few gems, I don't love XV. Ogre Tones, though, is one of my favorite King's X albums. I'm really glad I saw them a few times on that tour, since they played the entire album. I just hope they start throwing at least one or two of those songs in the mix whenever they decide to start touring again.

I think Ogre Tones and XV were the best two albums they've done since the 90's. I've never been fond of Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous, Manic Moonlight, or Black Like Sunday as a whole. Other than that I think all the records have some excellent stuff on the whole. I've also never seen them do any Ogre Tones tracks, but I did see them in '09 and they did 4 tunes off XV (Alright, Pray, Move, and Go Tell Somebody).

Yeah, I saw them in '08 at the beginning of the XV tour and they did most of that record, something like 9 or 10 songs. It was awesome to hear "I Don't Know" and "Blue" from that record. 2 of my faves from XV. They also did "If" from Ogre Tones at that show, which was a surprise. They always seem to through in a surprise or two on every tour I've seen. But with such a vast and awesome catalog, you really can't go wrong with any set you get from them. And that the fact that they are still going strong after 30 years with the same 3 guys is also quite a miracle.
