Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Full Album

Although it's become one of music's biggest inside jokes in recent years, this is about as close to a perfect indie rock album you'll ever get. It's also surprisingly heavy in parts! I don't want to spoil anything, but you need this album. Totally lives up to every single bit of praise it gets.

Boris - Heavy Rocks

Korosu/Dyna Soar
WaReRuRide
1970

This is Boris at their most rock. Heavy Rocks is the perfect title, because that's exactly what this album is. I love love LOVE every single thing that Boris has done, but they were so good at making this kind of dirty, sleazey heavy rock and roll that I can only wish they make another album like this. There are hints of their drone past and experimental future here and here, but overall this is balls-out no-shame rock and fucking roll.

Vektor - Black Future

Full Album

You knew it would be up here eventually. Combining elements of black metal, progressive metal, atmospheric/ambient music but most of all, fucking THRASH, this album rips from beginning to end. The instruments, the vocals, the production. Modern thrashterpiece, for sure! It's not too late to jump on the hype train!

The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious

Die, All Right!
A Get Together To Pull It Apart
Hate To Say I Told You

Tons of memories associated with this album. I actually burned this CD to my Xbox and would listen to it while I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. That's probably how I memorized the lyrics. I also remember watching their $2 Bill concert on MTV2...which they might have been the first in that series? I don't remember, but they killed. Whereas The Strokes had kind of a "Too Cool" mentality, The Hives fully embraced punk and incorporated it with their brand of high-energy garage rock. I actually really like all of The Hives' albums, but this will forever be my favorite.

Weezer - Pinkerton

Full Album

For the longest time, I would only listen to Weezer's Blue Album. I had their discography downloaded, but that's all I ever listened to. One day I just decided to check this album out...and I fell in love. Everything about this album is everything good about 90s college rock/the indie scene. It's loud and abrasive, but still really catchy. Rivers' self-depricating lyrics are at their best here and each song is brilliantly crafted. The standout to me is the trio of The Good Life/El Scorcho/Pink Triangle. You'll want to mosh but you'll lose your voice from singing along so hard. Amazing.

Daft Punk - Discovery

Full album

This is one of the greatest electronic albums ever made. Maybe THE best? It doesn't try to be deep, intelligent electronic music. It's two robots celebrating their love of disco and the beach while morphing it with their circuits and motherboards rooted deep in house movement. Honestly, I don't think the influence this album has on the popularity of electronic music in general now can be overstated. Discovery is pretty much the Sgt. Pepper's of electronic music of any kind.

Ben Folds Five - Ben Folds Five

Jackson Cannery
Philosophy
Julianne
Alice Childress
Underground
Sports & Wine
Uncle Walter
Best Imitation Of Myself
Video
The Last Polka
Boxing

You wanna talk about albums I've obsessed over? Okay, let's do that. One of my most-listened to albums ever. I'm sure I've fallen asleep after listening to this entire album on my walkmen in junior high hundreds of times. This album is just the jump-off point for Ben Folds' musical and lyrical brilliance. You have goofy songs about one-night stands with redheads (Julianne) and a being outcasts (Undergroud) balanced with serious more introspective songs about feeling out of place (Best Imitation Of Myself) or a story about a dissolving relationship (The Last Polka). Also, the song Uncle Walter is the reason I picked up a bass guitar. The best piano rock album! EVER!

Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet

Full Album

Let's put aside all my personal feelings on Andrew W.K. - that I think he's the most geuinely nice guy in entertainment. Let's not focus on his more eclectic ventures into music today. Let's even put aside that he's now married to one of the sexiest women I've ever seen holy god damn have you fucking seen cherie lily do yourself a favor and youtube her song dripping wet and get ready to fap. Let's just focus on this anomaly of an album. This is perfect pop metal. I'm not talking about shit like Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat or whatever. This is still heavy metal, but it's pop music with fucking balls. It's about an inch-deep, but it never asks to be taken more seriously than that. The one message here is simply - PARTY! Each song is fun and memorable and upbeat and still manages to be damn good music. Ready To Die is probably my favorite on the album, but the title track is nothing short of genius as well. This is one of the happiest and heaviest albums you'll ever hear and everyone should own a shrine to it.
