I got to the first show of theirs that I went to (fall 2001, Dallas) and was all excited, thinking it would be nerdy dudes like me who really looked into the meaning of songs and broke down the structures, but instead it was like 12,000 meatheads shouting FUCKIN' TOOOOOL and PLAY THE SOBER SONG and moshing as hard as possible, so that shattered my reverie pretty quickly

Yup, sounds about right. My 2009 show experience was pretty good, as the amount of dipshits around me was pretty slim. The show I saw last year, however, was a completely different story. The two douchebags next to me clearly didn't know any of the songs, and spent the entire show talking about which girls in the audience they would "definitely bang." Fortunately, they left before Lateralus, so I was free to spiral out.

I'm glad I'm not the only person here who feels this way about most Tool fans. Toronto is a notorious bandwagon city and it seems worse with Tool more than a lot of bands. You won't hear them mentioned for years, then they come to town and every moron with a backwards Toronto Maple Leafs hat is wearing a Tool shirt and pumping Schism (the only song they know from the radio). Then the day after the show Tool is forgotten.

I actually like the band less because of those people. They are a genius band.

I remember being the only one in high school wearing a Tool shirt and even then in public they were rarely seen around here.
A year later 10,000 Days is released and Tool is everyone's favorite band.

Dispute other people though Aenima is still one of my all time favorite albums.

Pretty sure I've had this same conversation before too. I think alot of bands have their share of absolute morons for fans. Tool was definitely 1 I put in this category w/ Disturbed & Slipknot being the 1st two off the top of my head (but morons for a much different reason than Tool).

I've never seen Tool, but you have got to be fucking kidding me! To quote Lisa Simpson, "why would they come to our concert just to boo us?"

If you want to drop acid and JUST listen to Sober and Schism do it in your basement.
