If you have no starting points whatsoever you just need to listen to the basic essentials. Start with these:

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu tang (36 Chambers)
Nas - Illmatic
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
GZA - Liquid Swords
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

fuck forgot about wu-tang. Yea GZA's Liquid Swords and the 36 Chambers album is essential too. Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is good too, but don't expect to understand a word of it.
