Would anyone recommend any basics for someone who is considering diving a little deeper into the genre? All I'm aware of (literally - I have almost NO starting points whatsoever) genre-wise is what's currently popular in high school (basically, "TITS 'N WEED MUTHAFUCKA"), NWA, 2Pac...basically anyone that's been deified in the last few years and is popular as holy fuck as a result.

...Help.
If you have no starting points whatsoever you just need to listen to the basic essentials. Start with these:

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu tang (36 Chambers)
Nas - Illmatic
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
GZA - Liquid Swords
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

fuck forgot about wu-tang. Yea GZA's Liquid Swords and the 36 Chambers album is essential too. Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is good too, but don't expect to understand a word of it.

36 chambers is the greatest hip-hop album of all time and the only one you'll ever need *drops mic and walks out*

The first two Wu-Tang albums are awesome and the last three are 50/50 good/nothing special.

If you want to hear good new hip hop...listen to The Game or Kendrick Lamar.
