The first band of the night and local opener was Houston’s Venomous Maximus, who also opened the SXSW High on Fire show at Emo’s and again they were a great fit. Their stoner/doom style with pretty traditional metal vocals were a good way to open the night.

The first band that’s part of the tour package was Lo-Pan from Ohio. They are on Small Stone records and like most of the label’s roster Lo-Pan is a stoner rock band. They reminded me of Kyuss, but the vocals had a quality reminiscent of Maynard from Tool. Lo-Pan was the least heavy band of the night, but they sounded great and even got the first pit of the night towards the end of their 30 minute set.

Goatwhore upped the intensity for the night with their black death assault. By the time Goatwhore hit the stage the venue was pretty full and the pits were pretty constant. Since I missed Summer Slaughter, this was my first time seeing them since Blood for the Master has come out and the new songs that I recognized sounded tight. As usual Sammy’s riffing and Ben’s intense stage presence were the focal point of Goatwhore’s performance. The floor exploded into their largest pit when they broke into Apocalyptic Havoc to close their set. They played for roughly 45 minutes.

There was about 30 minutes before Pike and co. hit the stage, plenty of time for people to prepare herbally and re-lubricate with beverages. When High on Fire hit the stage they started right off with Serums of Liao off of their most recent album. Since the F1 races are in Austin this weekend Emo’s dropped down 3 screens and projected race car crashes during High on Fire. It seemed like a cooler idea in theory than in practice. The clips they used were incredibly lame and were just did not fit with the raw power of High on Fire. All in all I was happy with the fact that they played tracks from all 6 of their albums; with such a epic back catalog it’s always going to seem like they missed something that someone wants to hear. They could’ve picked a better instrumental than DII, but it did slow things down nicely for a moment before barreling back into their closing songs. Their set ended up being about 70 minutes.

The good:
-It's nice that they're bringing out as much as they can from the first album to compliment it's recent reissue. I remember when Mastodon put out the Call of the Mastodon release which they completely ignored live. Made no sense.

-Snakes For The Divine is always awesome, though I think they ought to put it more in an opening slot now. It's not the new album anymore, there's no longer a need to make the audience wait for it. Devilution belongs in that spot anyway.

The bad:
-They really ought to be playing more from the new album. I realize you want to gauge the reaction and not want to pull an AMOLAD, but they've had 7 months to gauge that and the reception seems to be universally positive. There's no reason why they shouldn't be playing those songs along with Warhorn, Bloody Knuckles, Spiritual Rites, King of Days (pretty much any song except Samara really.)

-Dii is lame

The weird:
-again, why is Devilution the fourth song? That's like You've Got Another Thing Comin being the 4th song.

SFTD must be like a SAR for Metallica. They picked a goo closer and have been sticking with it for the last 3 years. Devilution should be moved later in the set, but SFTD should remain the closer for now.

No King of Days? Damn it all. Cool setlist otherwise though High on Fire seriously need to play longer sets. It's gotten to the point where there are too many fucking awesome High on Fire songs for only a 70 minute set. Hell you could take this current one, and throw in King of Days, Cometh Down Hessian and Hung Drawn and Quartered and it'd be ten times better.

Edit: Also, only one song from Surrounded by Thieves is total horseshit.

But the fact that the one song is Speedwolf is it's saving grace. Thieves is my favorite HOF album and I have yet to see that song live. It better stay in there the entire tour. That song rips like no other!!

Was definitely worth the drive from Houston to see HOF last night. Really strong performance by them. I agree that it would have been cool to have some more songs from the current album, but it was still very much worth it.

Nice setlist! I'm hoping to catch them in Vancouver next month. To finally hear Speedwolf would be seriously awesome, and finally hearing DII played after Rumors would be quite nice as well.
