Death Grips -- Brooklyn, NY - November 12th, 2012
The show was opened by up and coming cross-dressing mc Mykki Blanco. Mykki describes his style as "Acid Punk rap". I'm not sure if that's the best description for his sound but I think he was definitely a fitting opener for Death Grips. Mykki had tons of energy on stage and he actually got a really good reception. As his set progressed you could see a lot of people really getting into it. I must say I actually enjoyed his set but i'm not sure if i'd really want to listen to him on record. I can't provide a set but from a quick google search and my memory of the hooks I can tell you that some of the songs played include Wavvy, Kingpinning, and Fucking the DJ.
Around 10 o' clock, Death Grips hit the stage, well 2/3rds of Death Grips at least. Producer/keyboardist Flatlander has been MIA at every show since the release of NLDW. I wasn't sure what the crowd was gonna be like going in. I was hoping it would be like a hardcore show but I feared the crowd would be nothing but lame hipsters who would just stand still the whole set. Luckily that wasn't the case. The second Zach started wailing away on his little drumkit the crowd went nuts. Throughout the whole set there was moshing and stage diving. The crowd sure did their part but I was also worried about Death Grips would sound. The first couple live performances since the release of NLDW were both streamed online and they sounded horrible. They played over a backing track that had the vocals and everything which sounded much louder than the musicians themselves. I was glad to see they stopped doing this for the tour. The instrumental versions of the songs as well as the backing vocal tracks for songs with layered vocals were played over the PA. Most of the set sounded great. If you're on the fence about seeing Death Grips live I suggest you go for it, shit was intense. Doesn't that set not even add to an hour? Also does Zach have cymbals yet?

I think the set was about 50 minutes. Still no cymbals.

That's kind of lame for a headlining set, but at least the song selection kicks ass. And no cymbals is gay. Even more so is no Flatlander

Someone took some pretty good footage from the upper deck if you want to get a sense of what they sound like on this tour.

Your review and that footage just restored my faith for Friday. That set is pretty kick ass as well.
