Since late 2009 Brendon Small has been talking about this project he's been working on. He briefly mentioned in a few interviews that he's doing a new, non Dethklok album (with the same studio musicians) that would be familiar to Dethklok fans but much more melodic. It was mentioned occasionally throughout 2010, and seemed like it was completely forgotten in 2011. It wasn't until early this year that new info about the album finally emerged. I was thinking this would be a more serious project but upon seeing song titles like "Prophecy of the Lazer Witch", "Truth Orb and the Kill Pool", "Arena War of the Immortal Masters", and last but not least "Dangertits", I knew Brendon wouldn't be taking this project too seriously. Shortly after the press release the song "On My Way" dropped. I was very impressed with this song and it made me hopeful that this could be one of the year's best releases. Unfortunately "On My Way" is the best song on this album. Not that this album is bad, it's not even that big of a let down, it's just that the first single set the bar high for the rest of the album. The main thing I was interested in hearing from this album was Brendon's clean vocals. I must say I prefer the Nathan Explosion vocals to his performance on this album. Brendon's clean vocals are hit and miss for me. He sounds pretty good for the most part but at some points he sounds like your cool uncle singing Metallica songs at a karaoke bar. Brendon pretty accurately described the sound of this record when he said it takes inspiration from modern black metal, Queen, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. There is occasional tremolo riffing on a couple of songs and I definitely hear Foo Fighters influence all over this thing. There's also a concept to this album. It's something about a galactic hero having a bad break up with some chick who then starts dating a bad guy, I never really looked into the lyrics too much. If you're a fan of Dethklok, definitely check this out. If you're not, maybe listen to a couple tracks and see how you feel about it.
