Russian Circles -- Moscow, Russia -- April 15th, 2012

RC kicked ass. Probably the best post-anything band I've ever seen. Crowd was surprisingly into it (read: ready to fuck shit up) for a bunch of hipsters, and the venue was hella good. Too bad it's mostly used for local indie shows; the stage is at perfect height! Mike's fretting hand thumb broke a few nights ago, which is why the set is kind of short.

Dave Turncrantz = best live drummer ever! Guy has major skill, caught one of his drumsticks and got him to sign it afterwards.

Edit: Opening act was fucking awesome, a stoner metal band called Vagiant. Everybody except the singer came onstage in posh suits, and started playing some post-rock riff (probably to give the impression they were going to play some hipster-friendly shit and lull everybody into a false sense of security.) All of a sudden, their singer (long dirty hair, black eye) gets onstage, introduces the band, and as this Kyuss-like riff kicks in does a backflip into the audience.

Looking forward to seeing them open up for Red Fang in May!

So the crowd was physically active? I always felt that Russian Circles were probably the darkest, heaviest post band out there.

Not sure what the first statement has to do with the second, but yes. There were crowdsurfers, and it got pretty claustraphobic (or sweaty, if you prefer that word) in the crowd.

I'm listening to "Carpe" right now. That's no ordinary post-rock, it's really heavy and I think I'm going to love this band. Thanks!

Edit: Just finished listening to the album Enter and it totally shattered my expectations

Great review. Hopefully this show made up for the shitty time you had at Dark Funeral. RC kicks ass.

RC don't get pits or crowdsurfers in the States - that must be a Russia thing.

That said, I can't blame the crowd for being into them - first of all because they're fucking awesome (especially live), and second of all because you guys got a great set. They were generally alternating between "Horse" and "Youngblood" in the States - you guys got both.

Also, I noticed they seem to have switched out "Batu" for "Atackla". Interesting move there. Before the U.S. tour, I would have said "Batu" would be the better choice, but after having heard "Atackla" live, I'm convinced either would have been great.

Way to go, Void. Looks like we have yet another RC convert in our midst now.
