Lock Up -- Montreal, Quebec -- February 11th, 2012
Venue: Katacombes
Opening bands: Strong Intention, Pallor Mortis, Insanitarium The first band playing was my friend's death/thrash metal band, Insanitarium. They killed it. They're really getting better by time, the 3 new songs they played are really enjoyable modern thrash metal. As always the guitarist and the bassist/vocalist had a great stage presence. For one song, they brought on vocals another of my friends, the singer for Impalement, and for the last one, another friend of theirs came on stage to sing. Their songs sounded great with death metal vocalists! My only complaint is that the drums often lack thrash metal savagery; they're a bit too precise and sometimes dull. Pallor Mortis is in my opinon one of the finest young bands from Montreal. They play death metal in the vein of Covenant-era Morbid Angel and Incantation, with some slamming brutal death influences. Their singer has a really deep, low growling vocal and their drummer is just fantastic. Their songs were heavy as fuck and really dark. They were even better than when I saw the open for Vreid. Tomas Lindberg said during the Lock Up set that those two bands were the best local bands he had seen so far on tour! After a kinda long change up break, the touring bands came in. The first one was Strong Intention, a powerviolence/crust band with Sparky Voyles (ex-Dying Fetus, ex-Misery Index) on bass. They destroyed everything, and at this moment of the show the pit started getting serious. Their fast, grinding, parts were brutal and their mid-tempo riffs were incredibly catchy and circle-pit friendly. Really cool discovery. After that, I went out with a friend to get some pizza and when we came back, Goatwhore was about to play. I don't really have to describe their live performance, because most people on this website has probably seen them play many times, thanks to their intensive touring schedule. This was probably the best time I saw them and they had a huge crowd reaction. There were actually more people there for Goatwhore than for Lock Up. Again, needless to say, but Ben Falgoust is an awesome frontman. Also, the new songs sounded great live. The setlist may be missing one song, but I believe it's right. At last, when Lock Up played, many people had left the venue, but there were still about 150 people ready for the kill, and Lock Up did kill. Tomas Lindberg's voice sounded perfect. I've always wondered how he manages to keep his throat intact while screaming like a desperate maniac in At the Gates, Lock Up and Disfear. He is also a very charismatic frontman. Moreover, it wasn't only Tomas' voice that sounded perfect: the guitar and bass (Dan Lilker ) tones were crushing and the drums were impeccably pounding. By the middle of the set, the crowd seemed to be tired: they didn't scream as lound as usual and the pits were sporadic (me and 2 other guys always had to start them up) until they played the two Terrorizer covers (as a tribute to Jesse Pintado, R.I.P.) and the few last songs. One of the highlights of the set was obviously the cover of Dark Angel's "Merciless Death" played for the first time ever by Lock Up. Overall, this was one of the best concerts I've seen in a long time. I bought a Lock Up t-shirt with a black and white design that reads on the back: "SEVEN CHURCHES ON VINYL OR FUCK OFF!". Also I've got a flyer for NASUM/BRUTAL TRUTH/DROPDEAD on May 21st at the Sala Rosa, so expect a tour anouncement soon! ![]() Goatwhore Collapse In Eternal Worth Provoking The Ritual Of Death The Black Art of Deception In Deathless Tradition Carving Out the Eyes of God Sky Inferno Alchemy Of The Black Sun Cult When Steel and Bone Meet Judgement of the Bleeding Crown Invert The Virgin An End to Nothing Apocalyptic Havoc Lock Up Pleasures Pave Sewers Brethren of the Pentagram Accelerated Mutation Slaughterous Ways Triple Six Suck Angels Violent Reprisal Detestation Feeding on the Opiate Rage Incarnate Reborn Submission Castrate the Wreckage High Tide in a Sea of Blood Necropolis Transparent Stygian Reverberations The Jesus Virus Storm of Stress (Terrorizer cover) Fear of Napalm (Terrorizer cover) The Embodiment of Paradox and Chaos Vomiting Evil Cascade Leviathan Merciless Death (Dark Angel cover) After Life In Purgatory

God damn. Sounds awesome. You lucky bastards that are getting this tour. Seeing Tompa in such a intimate setting would be so amazing. Maybe Disfear will get added to Chaos in Tejas (wishful thinking).
That sounds like a badass shirt too!

Glad you had fun - I was thinking about going as well, but I've kinda lost interest in both Lock Up and Goatwhore over the past few months.
My friend has access to a car so we're going up to see Revocation and Cannabis Corpse, though! Maybe Converge too. Also, with the news of this nasum/brutal truth/dropdead tour, I may not have to go to mdf or chaos now I'd much rather see them on a small tour anyway.Soilent green makes me excited, too
