With South of Salem, Oregon doom-metallers Witch Mountain takes us down to the crossroads in the Mississippi delta. Their style of doom metal is very bluesy and of course, slow. Their combination of slow riffs and high-range female vocals is an approach to doom that I haven’t heard and is pretty solid. Now, the reason this album is low on the list is because I don’t feel that album really progresses over time or really goes anywhere. Most of the songs sound a little too similar for my taste. Considering this album was a decade in the making, you’d think they could write more concentrated songs that progress and evolve, but that didn’t happen here. If you’re into groove oriented metal, or wanna hear some modern metal with a bluesy twang, go for it, but other wise you aren’t missing anything great by skipping South of Salem, just something fairly good.
South Sugar
I really couldn't get into this record. Mostly for the two reasons you cited here. And for some reason, though incredible in their own right, the vocals somehow seem out of place with the band's sound.

Yeah, I kind of feel that way sometimes. There are moments I think it works fine but other moments, not so much.

Love the bluesy vibe on this one and think the female vocals fit perfectly. They have recently signed on with Profound Lore and will have new album out summer of 2012.

It took them a decade to produce their debut and now they're coming out with another one 1 year later?

Worst album of the year: Trivium – In Waves
I’m sure it’s no surprise to anybody that I dislike Trivium, so one might wonder why I listened to this album. Well, I listened to this album for the same reason I listen to other shit bands or albums such as Design the Skyline, Emmure, etc; for shits and giggles. Sometimes I’ll listen to obviously bad music for laughs. Over the course of the song or album I’ll normally think these three thoughts: It’s funny that people actually like this, it’s funny that anybody could be proud of making this, it’s funny that this band considers themselves to be a legitimate musical act. But In Waves didn’t leave me with thoughts. Instead my thoughts over the course of the album were: It’s sad that people actually like this, it’s sad that anybody could be proud of making this, it’s sad that this band considers themselves to be a legitimate musical act. In Waves pretty much takes all that is bad about the current metal scene, sans the synths, and wraps it into to gargantuan shit burrito. All the songs are incredibly uninspired and they’re all just even shittier versions of shitty metalcore songs that we’ve already heave 1,000 times before. This album isn’t bad, it’s flat out pathetic.

I'd say it's one of the worst albums I've ever listened to. But that's just like, my opinion, man.
