Mayhem -- Louisville, KY -- December 9th, 2011
Ending up going to this by myself after my friend bailed, but it was totally worth it. Missed Abigail Williams, Hate was terrible, Keep of Kalessin was terrible, but Mayhem totally dominated. What a lot of people forget because of the relatively conventional nature of Deathcrush and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas that everything else this band has done is fucked up and crazy and avant-garde and off-kilter. That really shined through, and so did Attila's insanity. Not sure if there's another frontman who I think is legitimately a loose cannon like he is. I was pretty sure if the show went badly the fake noose he put around his neck would have become real in a hurry. Dude's crazy, but it only makes his performance stronger. No pig heads last night, but lots of fog, inverted crosses, a noose, weird pagan symbols painted on his face, and yes, the famous human skull. Great gig.

Because latter-day Behemoth isn't that fucking good, so playing a third-rate knockoff on it is going to be even worse.

I used to think the same thing, until I listened to their albums and found that they're a pretty damned good band in their own right. Save for their last couple albums, maybe.

Even De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was mostly (if not completely, I'm not sure to be honest) written by 1991, which was the year the Norwegian scene was only just becoming relevant. And not to mention that by the time they actually did the proper recording of it Atilla's vocals had dissented from the stereotypical ones of the other black metal bands.

Not "for 1987," with hindsight. The songs on those records at least "rock," whereas after that they became a much weirder band.
But you're right, Attila made DMDS an even bigger game-changer. Listen, the point of this Mayhem is not normal, so don't argue.

Oh, forgot this: Hellhammer was wearing a Mayhem shirt that said "Black Metal for White People." Kinda lame since their music has never really dabbled in racism and as far as I knew neither have their public personas.
