Deep Purple -- Atlantic City, NJ -- June 11th, 2011
The concert was at the Showroom at the Tropicana casino. The opening act was a band I had not heard of before, called Ernie and the Automatics. Notably, their guitarist and drummer (Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian) were members of Boston back in the 1970's. The band was pretty good, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them live again. I don't have their setlist, but they played 3 original songs, and a 12-minute medley of Boston songs including More Than a Feeling, Rock and Roll Band, Foreplay, Smokin', and Long Time.
After a short set change it was time for Deep Purple. This was my first time seeing them. The setlist was almost perfect in my opinion. I would've liked to hear Child in Time, but I can live without it since they covered everything else. Also, the band performed the whole show with a 38-piece orchestra, which was... interesting. The orchestra worked really well on some songs (e.g. The Well Dressed Guitar), but on other songs you could barely even hear the orchestra in the mix. So I wouldn't say the orchestra was bad by any means, but it was ultimately forgettable. However, Deep Purple themselves were awesome! If you're a fan of their music but haven't seen them live before, I would highly recommend it. Child in time is my favorite deep purple song but they don't play it anymore because Gillan can no longer do the screams. How was the audience?

I was 4th row front and center. Overall, the crowd was pretty tame, even near the stage where I was. They did appear to be enjoying the music, but they remained seated for the majority of the show. From Space Truckin' til the end, the crowd actually stood up, and people were dancing in the aisles, which was cool.
Speaking of the crowd, I forgot to mention this in my first post. During the encore, one of the ladies in the front row climbed up on stage and crawled seductively over towards Ian. When she got to him, she stood up and put her arm around him. Keep in mind this was in the middle of the song. Ian was obviously not expecting this, but he took it in stride. He finished the verse and then walked her back to the edge of the stage, where security forced her back into the crowd and then escorted her out of the venue. The whole scene was pretty funny to watch.

It's not purple anyway.
But, it was only Ritchie's fault, so forgive my stupid remark.

I saw this same show four nights later at the Beacon Theater in NYC. Pretty much the same experience and exact same setlist. Due to a mix-up with the tickets, we missed the opening band. Would have been cool to hear some Boston.
Good show overall. My first time to see them, as well, and in another city. Pretty cool experience.
